I have recently bought some anti-bac gel for anybody that is going to be handling my baby when they've had a cigarette..basically they go for a fag they come in and then use it! Ive just been telling my friend who said it sounds abit OTT, i explained it was bcos i do not want my daughter or her clothes smelling of smoke..to which she replied..well she will be smelling of wee, poo and sick..... does anybody else think i'm being over the top??x

to be fair i dont think itll make a difference as everything about smokers stinks not jsut their hands...

It wont make much difference, but I dont think you are being OTT - your baby, your rules. I work with anti bac products, and they are designed to kill microorganisms. They wont make the hands smell nice and clean, or anything. If anything the smokers breath will be the nastiest element to have huffing and puffing over a baby.

I know but....if they touch her cheeks or nose for example with the hand they have been smoking with ....

I am doing the same hun.... cant stand the thought of her being touched by people with smokey hands....yuck!!!!!

I don't think your being over the top. I told my husband to let his family know, they're going to have to wait 15 minutes after they have a cigarette and to wash their hands before they get to hold our daughter. I'm the one probably being over the top but I just don't want my daughter around cigarette smoke.

I think it makes a difference and will be doing the same, also they cant handle him for at least 30mins after as its still being breathed out!!

i dont think thats ott at all, ive told OH that any that wants to hold bubs will have to wash their hands after a fag and they will have to wait at least 15mins once they finish

make them all wash their hands and brush their teeth thats what i did, including to my daughters dad. everyone else was asked not to smoke until they had left visiting.. dont be worried about offending people or being over the top its your baby :)

No you're not being over the top. Smokers smell absolutely mingin. It's horrible, smokers only get offended by things like that because they know they stink xx

I will be having a half an hour rule, if you've had a fag within half an hour then you aint touching the baby or giving her kisses, simples! Me and OH have quit smoking for our little girl and expect that everyone will respect that it is our choice not to have it around LO. It's tough titty otherwise lol xx

My friend went to a thrift store and made her FIL's girlfriend wear it and wash her hands and brush her teeth before she held the baby. The carcinogens stick to the clothes for like, four hours or something.

Edit: Oops, I meant she bought a big shirt, just to keep at her house.

And you are not being over the top. You are doing your job, protecting your baby. People should understand that.

No ur not goin OTT at all huni!
Your not sayin smokers cant hold my child
ur saying clean up ur hands and then hold her.

Not OTT no, just doing what you think is best to keep your baby safe, but.. a bit pointless, since there will be smoke and chemicals from their cigarette in their hair and clothes. really, aswell as going outside for a cig and waching your hands, you SHOULD shower and change your clothes before going near a baby!

Antibacterial gel is a good idea just because of all the germs. It won't help with the smoke, like others have posted. Smoking is such a nasty habit. I can't believe I was ever married to one! He never smoked inside, but still. Now when he comes to pick up the kids, I can smell him across the room, and I wonder how I ever got so used to it as to not notice. It is gross! I will just die if any of our kids grow up to be smokers.

Residue is on clothes, hair, skin, etc of smokers. I would suggest telling people not to touch baby unless their hands are washed at least. The bacterial gel will not do anything about residue. You are not being over the top! My OH smokes and I make him put on a special coat + brush his teeth, wash his hands after smoking!

If their parents use tobacco, that curiosity may expose babies to what some doctors are calling "thirdhand" smoke — particles and gases given off by cigarettes that cling to walls, clothes and even hair and skin. Up to 90% of the nicotine in cigarette smoke sticks to nearby surfaces, says Georg Matt, a professor at San Diego State University.

Preliminary research by Matt and others suggests the same chemicals that leave a stale cigarette odor on clothes and upholstery also can be swallowed, inhaled or absorbed through the skin of non-smokers.

In his small study of 49 infants under 13 months old, Matt found nicotine in the air and dust throughout smokers' homes, even when parents smoked only outside. Tests also found a nicotine byproduct, cotinine, in babies' urine and inside shafts of their hair.

Smoke stays in a smokers clothes too :( and they still breathe smoke on baby after a while
Its not over the top at all hunny, and this is coming from an ex smoker!

What the smoker breaths out around your baby is way worse then what is on their hands. I think washing their hands is more effective then the gel as well. At my breast feeding class they got on the top of smoking and the nurse suggested that people dont hold your baby for at least 3 hours after smoking, they should also completely shower and change clothes! I know this isnt practical but I don't plan on letting people who smoke hold my baby! Luckily I only have 2 people in my family that smoke, my Oh's sisters BF and my sisters BF... I flat out told my mom if she didnt quit smoking then she wasn't coming near my baby, who in turn said well your father and I both smoked around you and your fine! (I have asthma and chronic bronchitis since I was very little.. and I was always sick) Anyway she ended up quitting...

i would love it if i could avoid all smokers from holding my baby. but in reality my mom, grandpa, aunt, uncle, his wife, FIL, MIL, OH's nana and cousin, my brothers...almost EVERYONE we know smokes. so there is simply no way i can avoid it. other than being a complete b**ch and saying NO ONE can hold her, idk what else i would do. everyone that smokes around us are chain smokers so the hand sanitizer wouldn't even matter :(

My OH smokes and agrees whole heartedly about the antibac gel. He'll go outside to smoke wearing a coat, no matter how hot just to prevent the smoke being on his clothes. As soon as he comes in he'll wash his hands then use the anti bad gel. My MiL thinks its OTT but she's not allowed to pick up my kids until she's done it.
