I had my first midwife visit today and half nine, been feeling in limbo since the tests so was really looking forward to ticking this off and feeling like we were getting somewhere.

After sitting at the doctors for over half an hour the receptionist came to speak to me .... The midwife had not turned up, no one even knew which midwife it was supposed to be ( she had been ringing around trying to sort it out) and I have had to make a new appointment for next Wednesday.

She was really embarrassed and apologetic, and I just feel sick, I feel like the last 2 weeks have been building up to this visit - maybe I am making a big deal over it, but it's my first pregnancy, I'm an "older" pregnant lady and I had so many things to ask - I assume this will now knock me back by a week for things like the dating scan - I have no idea really of my dates so was keen to "get started" :(

I can nt believe that a midwife could not show up at work, but equally an astounded that no one even knows which midwife it was supposed to be in order to track things down.

Unbelievable :(

How long do you normally have to wait for the scan? I am worrying because I don't know my dates and I do want to have the check for downs syndrome on the scan(I can't remember what it's called) and I thought there was on,y a certain window in which hat could be done :( :(

WOW!!!That is terribly unprofessional on the midwifes part. have you tried the clear blue digital test hun? They are 100% accurate in telling you when you conceived. I had charted everything and I did a normal test and got my BFP (2 lines) and got the clear blue because I wanted to see the words 'PREGNANT. It also tells you when you conceived. I haven't had a scan yet, my first one isn't until I'm 12 weeks but that's only because I know my dates. By rights, you should really have had a scan by now. It's crucial the blood test is done at 10 weeks for the down syndrome test and not earlier. I'm sure later won't hurt. A scan also goes with that test at 12 weeks.

I had the same for my 16 week appointment hun, the midwife just.... didn't show. Im friends with the receptionists at the GP surgery and was told that they do this often, just don't turn up, not a word to the surgery nor to their patients and breeze back in like nothing happened the following week.

Hope your appointment with them next week is more successful that todays attempt :(

I agree, that is unprofessional, but realistically these things do happen. She could have been in a car accident or had a breakdown, or a sick child and not been able to call. Or maybe she did call and someone didn't relay the message properly from the hospital. Or she could have had an emergency birth and been stuck somewhere and not about to leave the woman she was with (our midwives who do the antenatal appts also do all home births in the community, so sometimes if there is an emergency, they have to cancel appointments). But I agree, for you, it does suck. Have they booked you in for a new appointment? They should have been able to do that for you right then at the surgery. Also, you can call your local midwife unit to talk to them about scheduling your scan. Unless you are very late in 1st tri now, there shouldn't be a reason they can't get you in in time (NT screening can be done up to 14 weeks). If you explain to them about the missed appointment they can hopefully start the process of booking your scan. But don't let it get you down. Someone else's behavior shouldn't have a baring on your own worry about your pregnancy. It's unprofessional and unfortunate, but still sounds like you are healthy and doing well and that's what really matters.

Im sorry hun, i know how frustrated you must feel, just wanted to reassure you it probably wont put anything else back, ive had a consultant appointment and my dating scan appointment through and my midwife hasnt even been in touch yet ((hugs))

Sorry you had such a bad experience. Just to reassure you I have also had my scan dates through from the hospital and have not yet seen my midwife. I assume the doctors office must have arranged it when I went in initially. Maybe give the midwife unit a call to check? This might also help understand why they let you down, as whatever the circumstances they could have at least given you a phone call to let you know.

if you are high risk or above 35 yrs. my Dr does the u/s starting around 6 weeks.

Yes I did, but they said 3 + weeks or something very similar so still not really sure LOL!

I just can't believe no one even knew WHO the midwife was supposed to be, she could have had an accident or anything, I am just staggered that they couldn't even track down who it was!

Have got somewhat over my annoyance now - although I am still disgusted :) :)
