Hi girls really hope you can help ,my baby boy is 13 days old today.I have tried every bottle and teat you can think of and they are all either to fast to slow wrong shape and im going crazy,to start with Bradley is constipated and had been prescribed lactilose, can i add this to his milk.I have decided to settle with the boots own brand bottle with wide neck vari-flow teat, are these ok to use with him being so young? He is just so full of wind i feel like all i ever do is feed and wind him and he still looks so irritated and then gets hiccups,im such a worrier and i am actually making myself ill with it.

Another question is it safe to boil the kettle add your sterile water to sterile bottles then add them to fridge until needed(24hrs)then add formula and heat?

Answer really appreciated.xxx:cry:

Just do what suits with the bottles! No need to put the water in the fridge. Add the boiled water to sterile bottles. Leave at room temp and add powder as needed. X

Hey sweetie! Congratulations on your baby boy xx

Firstly - variflow teats are usually fine from birth.

Secondly - hiccups are very normal in babies, and they get them a lot. This is because the muscles in their diaphragm are very weak and prone to spasm - which causes the quick intake of breath. As he gets older the bouts will become fewer as his muscles strengthen. So stop worrying about those, they are natural and it's nothing you are or aren't doing.

Thirdly - the safest way to pre-make bottles is to boil the kettle and leave for 30mins, measure out the water, add the powder, shake well, rapid cool in a bowl of cold water and store at the back of the fridge for 24hrs. This ensures you are adding the powder to water hot enough to kill the bacteria because it isn't sterile. Then you can just heat one up as needed. I find it easiest to use the microwave - just make sure you shake the bottle really well after to mix in the hotspots.

I'm sorry I don't know about adding the lactulose to the milk. Have you also tried giving a little cooled boiled water to help get things moving? That always worked for Fran - even when she was only a couple of days old.

Formula fed babies are prone to a bit of constipation in the first few weeks until their tummies get used to processing the formula. Again this is normal and you will find it all settles down xx

Please feel free to pm me if you want any help, advice or just a chat xx

You really are my angel!thanks for your help hun i even have a smile :).with regards to his wind,is it best stopping half way through feed and winding him?hes so amazing and good as good he only winges and grunts with the wind never screams or cries for a long period of time.I just want him to be ok :). thank you very much again.xxx

Yes I would stop at least once or twice during a bottle to wind Fran when she was newborn - then as they get older they let you know when they need to bring some wind up.

If he struggles to bring wind up you could always try giving him some infacol - it takes a few days to work but is supposed to be good xx

Dr brown bottles Are quite good too - you can get these in boots. They are a bit more fiddly than normal but are quite good with helping for wind xxx

I second the infacol suggestion. My LO is on this and it really helps. I just put it in his bottle these days, in the early days I gave it to him from the dropper but now he makes a face lol.
