Anybody here feeds soy milk to their toddlers???

I was thinking of switching Josh, not because he has problems, simply because we all drink soy milk and we don't like the idea of cow's milk.

Any advices?

Thanks xx

At our last hospital appointment for my son's chronic constipation, the Consultant Paediatirican said to stop cows milk immediately and give alternatives, ie Soya etc. He didnt like Soya, so is on Rice Milk instead. I seem to recall a note on Soya carton saying thats is suitable from 2 years old.

Hope this is of help.

hayden couldn't tolerate cows milk for awhile so we had some choices between soy, rice, goats and almond. We chose rice milk. I have heard some negatives about soy milk, he hormones and such, especially for little boys. So we didn't want him to have it

Please research before switching to soy, especially for boys. There are studies saying it interferes with children's hormones, for boys this could mean making them infertile.

I stopped drinking soy milk after I did research into things that cause endometriosis, and soy (non-pure) products were pointed at.

Thanks girls, wow some pretty interesting crazy things!!! I will look more into it. Thanks xxx

I swear by soy milk for me... We buy the So Nice and Natura organic ones

my 1 year old is on soya milk. he has an allergy to cows milk (is violently sick untill his stomach is totally empty from even a tiny amount)

the hormone thing - ive ony heard about it causing problems with girls - as in if given under a certain age it can cause very painful periods.

he is under the care of the dietician and surely she would have told me if there was any links between infertility and soya milk.

This was taken from this article https://www.consumerhealth.org/articles/display.cfm?ID=20000501001338:

HORMONAL IMBALANCES IN INFANTS Speaking of the estrogenic compounds in soy, a recent study of infants fed soy formula found that these infants had concentrations of estrogen compounds in their blood 13,000 to 22,000 times higher than babies on milk-based formula or breast milk.

FEMINIZATION OF MALES One can only surmise what the long-term biological effects of the exposure of infants, especially male infants to such high levels of adult female hormones might be. The baby boy in the first six months of his life has a testosterone tide with testosterone levels as high as an adult male. This testosterone programs him to grow into a man, to have 3-D spatial thinking, to have differences in all of his organs, including the reproductive organs. You don't see the results or the effects until he reaches puberty. We are finding now, in medical literature, a tremendous amount of alarm about the number of boys who are reaching puberty with undeveloped sexual organs with penises the size of little babies.

EARLY MENARCHE IN FEMALES We are also finding more and more girls having puberty before the age of eight. Fifty per cent of African American girls have pubic hair and breast development before the age of eight. And 3% have this development before the age of three. This is an obscene tragedy. A study of girls in the Dominican Republic who had this early menarche found one correlation; they were given soy formula as infants. We really have a tragedy in the making on our hands; we also have liability class action suits that can hopefully destroy this industry.

If you research you will find more.

My sister brought this to my attention because her little girl is seriously allergic to cow's milk. She was put on soy, when she went into hospital still being ill the specialist there said they couldn't believe she was put on soy as it is well known that soy proteins are the same as cow, therefore cause the same problems. This isn't releavant if your baby is lactose intolerant. She then did further research into soy and was really upset about what she found out, and also that it was a Dr that had put her baby on it in the first place.

Anyway, just look into it.

if its for a toddler then that is irrelevant.

its only not recommended for under 6 months of age and only as a main source after 2 years.

Hey, the stuff about soya and infants is def true but once it comes to an older child it doesn't apply as much as soya will only be part of their diet, not the entire diet as a soya formula would be for a pre weaned baby. So a bit of soya here and there in a mixed diet will do no harm. How about trying different plant milks as well as soya? Rice milk is good (but low in protein), there's also almond, quinoa and coconut milks. Soya's been a big part of far eastern diets (japan for example) for thousands of years with few problems.

As far as I am aware, soya acts as a mild contraceptive but does not lead to or cause infertility. However, if you are concerned then there are other plant based milks available.

my son was on wysoy formula from 3-4.5 months and then nutramigen after that until recently when i put him on soy milk cartons i asked the dietician at the hospital and she said it was unproven scaremongering. why would they sell infant milk powder suitable from birth if it actually harmed our babies. if all this research had been really true(and i heard it all 15 months ago when archie went on soya) then it would be off the shelf now but wysoy and infasoy are readily available in boots
