Spotting the sex at 20 week scan

Hi there,

I know this might be a silly question but My husband does not want to know the sex of the baby and is nervous of coming to the 20 week scan in case he sees on screen by mistake. Has this happenend to anyone? or is it avoidable? Also I want to know which adds a little difficulty will the sonographer write it on a piece of paper for me so I can read it when I am home and he is not around (not because he does not want me to know either but believes he might be able to tell from my reaction).

The sonographer will probably ask you if you want to know the sex or not so you don't "accidentally" see something -- you can request it too, though.

I can't say for boys, and must say my friend who has a boy said she saw his bits on the scan. But for girls I think they have to zoom in quite a bit to see the shape properly, as they did this at my scan. They didn't ask me if I wanted to know the sex, I had to ask. If I were you I'd say when you first get in there you want to keep it a surprise. I don't know about the writing it down thing, though I have heard of this happening before. There's no harm in asking :)

I don't think you will be able to stop it but if you did want to find out if you just ask the sonographer to write it down im sure they would :) xx

I think if you tell them you don't want to know they can make sure you don't see, you could get oh to leave and then get the sonographer to show/tell you after...

I told the sonographer that we didn't want to know straight away, but she went between the legs and we both think we saw a willy unmistakeably! Even just to eradicate any sort of suspicion, I would ask the sonographer to tell you when they are checking between the legs so you can close your eyes, just so that you can be completely sure you didn't see anything. I'm continually wondering about what we saw now and am almost convinced it's a boy, which is a bit disappointing when we wanted a surprise. (not disappointed at the sex at all, just that we wanted it to be a complete 50/50 surprise and now I think it might be a boy more than a girl). xxx
