Hey all, firstly I was wondering if there is any different between being referred to a fertility specialist and a sub fertility clinic I assume they both employ gynecologists etc which do the same thing???

I was wondering if you could help me prepare for my first visit :cloud9: I'm very excited and impatient lol was wondering if any of you would mind telling me how your first visit went?... is it likely I would be prescribed clomid on my first visit or will they wait a while?...(I have PCOS, and have recently had it reconfirmed etc by a u/s & a blood test before being referred...so I'm hoping they won't put me through any more tests :S or will they?)
are there any questions I should definitely ask? will they have to do a pelvic exam? :S thanks xxx

Hello there,

I have just looked on the internet for this "sub fertile" term, as when I went to my first FS appointment yesterday that is what was on the forms. Apparently is is...

"A couple that has tried unsuccessfully to have a child for a year or more is said to be subfertile meaning less fertile than a typical couple. The couple's fecundability rate is approximately 3-5%. Many of its causes are the same as those of infertility. Such causes could be endometriosis, or polycystic ovarian syndrome"

I have PCOS, confirmed by US only. When I went yesterday they did an internal, booked me for CD5, 8 and 21 bloods and have booked an HSG for me and arranged for OH to have semen analysis. I didnt even know I was being referred to a FS - I thought I was being referred to an endocrinologist!

I hope this helps a little, sorry I cannot say much more!

I think the difference could be that sub-fertility is where they can try Clomid, Metformin etc to help you get pregnant where as the infertility part is where they have tried everything else and it would be a procedure such as IVF etc that you would need to get pregnant.

Only my thinking behhind it mind :-) x

LJaydow - Thank You :) my doctor advised us to sort out my oh's sperm test before we went to the FS so we've sent off his sample and just waiting for the results now *fingers crossed* .. I'm hoping they won't have to do an internal or laparocopy/hsg? I really hope not! lol

MrsChambers - Thank You, that makes sense really! :-) As I guess with things like PCOS although it is more difficult to have children it's not impossible, you just need a nudge along ;)... hopefully lol

MrsChambers p.s. hope you don't mind me asking, did you get prescribed clomid on your first visit? :cloud9: xxx

Don't be silly course I don't mind you asking. I was going to a specialist at one hospital for a year and never saw her just the dietician in the PCOS clinic. I changed hospitals and went to first gynae clinic was referred to subfertility and was given Clomid at first subfertility appointment. Hubby has perfect SA so it's all on me. Remember if you in armed with info they seem more understanding x
