Hi all,
Im 37 + 3 days... My due date is 29th June :)
Alot of people have mentioned getting a sweep done, but can someone explain what it is, does it hurt? How they do it?
Chances of it actually working??

Im in agony with baby, back is killing me an im so uncomftable so really just want little one here now :)

Thanks

Don't get one done yet. Too early. Baby could be born jaundice or not feed well, even at 37 weeks.

It does hurt but I personally didn't find the pain all that bad. Some women describe it as awful pain. Just depends on your cervix I think.

They just jam their fingers up there and rub aggressively against the cervix for about 20-30 seconds.

I had one on my due date. I wouldn't say it hurt but was a bit uncomfortable as they use a couple if fingers and 'sweep' around your cervix.

It all depends on how 'favourable' your cervix is as to if it works or if they can even do it

It needs to be soft or something.

In my case it worked. Starting contracting later the same day. But she did tell me it was 50/50 that itd work

They don't usually offer one til you are 40 weeks with 1st baby or 41 with subsequent babies

My midwife wasn't aggressive at all. Really gentle in fact.

I've had three sweeps between 2 kids and the two I had for my first child were pretty aggressive. That was by a female ob. Oddly enough, for my second child, I had a male ob on the day of my sweep and he was much more gentle. His sweep was the only one that worked.

But they offered it to me with my second child at 37+4 and I took it not knowing that it would work or that it was not good to have done early. Baby girl came out 20 hours later and was totally different than my first child born at 40+2. She would just sleep and sleep and sleep. She wouldn't eat. She had pretty bad jaundice. It was a nightmare. Ill never do it again that early.

They may have offered it to me though because my thyroid was hyperactive and they were iffy on whether or not to start me on meds for my heart rate being so high. Resting heart rate of 130+. So I think they tried the sweep to get baby to come so as to not start me on meds.

I've had 2 done in the last couple of weeks, I'm 41+1 today and neither sweeps worked for me, considering the 2nd one my midwife was convinced that it would send me into labour, still booked in for an induction Sunday :-(. I hope it works for you Hun x

I'm 38 weeks and had a sweep done today only because OB was able to, something about my cervix progressing? I'm booked to be induced next week at 39+ 1 depending on my blood levels (possible mild case of OC) but may just get another sweep done if blood levels look okay. Doc did say this sweep could also trigger labour! I heard some people need it find 2/3 times for it to work guess it depends on your body. It was uncomfortable but deep breaths helped and didn't feel like it lasted long.
