Hello all....not sure if this has been mentioned before (I haven't seen it, but apologies if it has!). Depending on your location you may or may not have heard of this I guess!

I'm confused .. at my first AN app this was mentioned and the advise was to get it? Not sure when exactly its given? But I "thought" this was now seen as a threat which had been slightly blown out of proportion, and no longer a problem per se. The thoughts seem to be that over the winter months it may come back....

Generally if there is a vacc available I get it for myself & older child, However when the SF one was brought out I was very dubious about it and didnt get it nor give it to my son, (a doctor I asked at the time also advised against it :nope:)

However now that Im pregnant and because I know that the effects/danger for pregnant ladies/ at delivery were tenfold, I'm starting to wonder if I should avail of it!! ..... the doctor and nurse present were both adamant that they had seen its effects first hand etc

Just wondered if anyone else had been offered this, and if you intend to get it I guess, as Im still undecided about it!!

Personally I wouldn't recommend it but thats because over here there has been several cases of people developing Narcolepsy after getting the vaccination and now they're considering suspending vaccinations because of it.

Edit: I just rechecked the news on it and its only been linked to the Pandemrix shot so if you don't get that one then maybe its fine

im not having it, nor have been told to have it or been told anything about it.
Swine Flu is just that it is a flu, just like influenza it can kill if not treated properly. i actually came down with it when it first became an 'epidemic' and i was pregnant at the time and all i did was stay at home, drank plenty of water, take paracetamol readily, and drink plenty of honey and lemon. also i kept warm, i didnt wrap up too much so i didnt overheat but i made sure i tried to keep my body at a nice steady temp. this way my body could fight it off.
i personally feel this is safer than the vaccine. my mum, being a nurse, saw alot of old people die after having the vaccine, either due to a reaction to it or it causing problems with their current medication or cause their already problematic medical health to worsen.
i know alot of women who have been pregnant contracted swine flu and them and the baby have been ok.
it was all blown out of proportion as it was just a flu, people die from normal flu so of course they will die from swine flu, its just something that cant be helped.
viruses like the common cold and flu dont pass through the placenta, if they did then alot of women would panic when catching a cold or be told to basically not to have any contact with any other human being for hte full 9 months as even though it may just be a common virus to us it could potentially cause harm to a developing feotus. but of course it isnt harmful as these strains of viruses dont pass through the placenta.
the vaccine was produced very quickly and didnt even have a proper medical trial so there is no way to determine the long term side effects to a expectant mother and her unborn baby.
but again as said before it was all blown out of proportion, they were expecting to have another epidemic of it over the summer months due to the strain mutating to survive the heat better but did that happen? no they were panicing over nothing as it is just a flu which has derived from pigs that is all. xx

Thanks for your replies ladies...TBH my gut feeling has always been to avoid it and I still feel that way!

Like you ladies have said the side effects/potential problems with the vaccine itself make me want to avoid it like the plague. Loolabear its interesting that the hospital here is still pushing it and handing out leaflets and you havn't heard a jot (Im going through the heathcare in N. Ireland so would have thought they would be on the same page as hospitals in the UK)- perhaps they have supplies to get rid of here or something or maybe Im being too cynical!

anyway thanks again...Ive been worrying over this :nope:

Glad you guys don't have it, cause I've had the letter to make an appointment for a while now, still haven't had it and I don't really want it. Someone else I know who's 16 weeks pregnant had it and she was ill the day after.....Only for a day, but still.. .don't really fancy that. She seems to have come down with morning sickness now aswell, not sure if that's got anything to do with it... But anyway, makes me feel less bad for not having had it yet since the letter.. :)

I asked my midwife and she said they won't do it as its 'receeding' and there is not so much of a threat - but then I read in the paper its still a big issue.... But if they won't do it I don't have to make a choice!

I choose not to have it as I didn't want to risk the health of my baby, also it's not heard of that much now so think the panic is over x

Personally, I wouldn't recommend it, and I wouldn't get it myself.

I had it last year as I am asthmatic - I work in a large office and there were lots of suspected cases there - I didn't suffer any ill affects.

I don't know if I would have it while I was pregnany tho....

perhaps they have supplies to get rid of here or something or maybe Im being too cynical!:

Maybe I'm too cynical too but I know that Scottish Government bought way in excess of vaccine dished out last year (due to the problem being nowhere near as bad as they thought, so take up was low). So, I'm expecting a push for it again with associated horror stories this year as soon as the leaves start falling!

I certainly wont be getting it!

Hi :flower: I got the swine flu jab when I ws 6 weeks pregnant as did my sister in law and my next door neighbour none of us have had any side effects both of their babies are born and they are both healthy  in Paisley where we live the local maternity had 3 deaths of pregnant mothers due to swine flu so I would imagine the uptake in our town is very high, it's a decision I didn't need to think twice about but it's not so easy for everyone :hugs:

My children have both been vaccinated against swine flu, they were a little sleepy the day after the jab but apart from that there were no side effects.
I haven't been vaccinated but I did have a bad case of swine flu right at the beginning of the year so I am hoping this means I may now be able to fight it off easier.
They are not offering vaccines round here anymore, just said they would incorporate it into the seasonal flu vaccine, for which I am not entitled.
