I'm thinking of getting a tablet for my DS for his third birthday. I don't own one myself so don't know a lot about them. Would you ladies be able to give me advice? Should I get a leap pad/innotab or should I get a second hand iPad? Or something else?!

Help?!!

My LO got this one for Christmas and it's actually pretty good!

It has some preloaded games already and I've added a few more from Google play store for free. Battery doesn't last very long but you wouldn't need it to for a toddler.

Personally I'd get something he can grow with, so an iPad or similar. Ben got a leap pad for his 3rd birthday, 2 days later I got an iPad for Christmas and the leap pad never got touched again!!

We got the Fire HD kids edition https://www.amazon.com/Fire-Kids-Di...UTF8&qid=1420121511&sr=1-3&keywords=fire+kids for my 3.5yr old and it's awesome. It comes with a whole bunch of videos, books, games, apps, no need to install anything, just charge it up, connect it to wifi and it's ready to go! It even has a protective case around it which makes it very safe for little clumsy hands.

That's one I hadn't thought of Palestrina. you can't get a specific kids one here but you can get the cover and set a normal one to a kids mode. My FIL has a kindle fire so I'll ask him to bring it over on Sunday when he visits so I can have a look at it. I think I may also see if any of my friends have an iPad I can take a look at because I have an iPhone so I'm used to that.

I like the look of the one Felix linked but the reviews on the battery life have put me off.

My son is 2.5 and I wanted to get the iPad (we have them) but feared he may break it,loose it etc. we went for the tesco hudl2 as I had several vouchers I could use. It actually works well, he has little games, I've downloaded some films etc. he has additional needs and is a bit behind but works it with great ease:thumbup:

I was planning on getting a leap pad or similar for my lo birthday next month, but I have just got a tesco hudl 2 for myself and she loves it! I have a kiddie bumper on it to protect it from drops. She has her own log in on it, which gives her very restricted access which I control. There are lots of toddler games and apps like Cbeebies and you can set a time limit on it.

I ambushed my FIL for his kindle fire yesterday and this weekend I'm going off to tesco to have a look at the hudl. I think I've decided against a secondhand iPad as it won't have a warranty and a new one is too expensive.

Thanks for your help ladies.

I've got my LO a Nurvo Android Tablet. It's a fairly cheap brand, but works well and got the main apps I wanted to download available like cbeebies and peppa painting etc.

Shes not had it yet, being only 17months but she'll get it soon when I've sorted the cover and bag for it.

I second the suggestion for a Kindle Fire. We don't have the 'kids version' (although it sounds awesome) but have a regular Kindle Fire HD and we have a profile for my DS that allows him to play his apps but by setting the parental controls it doesn't allow him to access any settings or anything that could 'accidentally' be purchased through the apps. You can set their access levels and how many hours per day they're allowed to play (we don't use this function though). I bought an "Otterbox" case which protects the Kindle on all sides and the Kindle is user friendly enough that my DS can play with it on his own without any help.

The only "disadvantage" to the Kindle is that there are less apps available than you would find with an Apple or Android device, but Amazon lets you earn "coins" which can also be used to purchase apps (there are also loads of free apps available) but we haven't had to use any real money to buy anything yet due to the coins we've earned through Amazon, so even apps that aren't free have been bought with the "coins." We also have Netflix loaded and my DS watches videos on there.

We got a refurbished Kindle Fire HD 7" 32GB for $115 which was an amazing deal, and we've been really happy with it!

I have a kindle fire myself which I love but there are a lot more games on android rather than kindle.

I'd recommend a kindle fire, too. My son has an Innotab, and he much prefers to play on my kindle. He does play with the innotab, but complains that the games are slow. Which they are. The response time on the games is reeeaaaally slow, which is really frustrating for him because then he thinks he didn't do something correctly since its not responding. You don't get that with kindle games for kids, they respond pretty much right away. Also should point out that the games for the kids systems, like innotab and leap pad, etc, are expensive and not many available to choose from. Each game was around $25, and after having it for 2 years now, I have only found like 5 games for him that are age appropriate that he would actually want to play. Add that up. $125 for 5 games....That's nuts. You can get games free or for a few dollars on a kindle or ipad, which are just as good for learning. Also, most of those systems run on batteries, not a charger like a kindle or ipad. So there's that expense too. I bought rechargeable batteries for his, but again, there was more money put into it. In hindsight, it was a total waste of money for something I could have gotten much cheaper with a kindle, which would have been more satisfying for him overall.

I think it's possible the UK Kindle store for apps and US could be different and there's more on the US store. It's like that with Apple.

Could be wrong though!

A refurbished Ipad from Apple carries the same one year warranty that a new ipad has. The ones from the Apple site only though. Referbs from ebay do not. That's what I'm going to get my dd for either her 2nd bday or next Christmas. She already plays some games on my phone and knows how to open them up on her own so going to an ipad should be a bit easier for her. Also, the refurbished store on Apple updates constantly with new products.
I've never used a kindle fire (altho I have and really enjoy the paperwhite for reading), but heard those were good too.

And otterbox. I have one on my phone and despite her dropping and even throwing it, it has survived without damage.

Thank you so much everyone. This has been really useful in helping me get an idea of what to look for. Definitely avoiding the innotab (I have an issue with vtech anyway, everything we have had from them has broken) I'm going to check out the other options. Thanks for the info about the refurbished iPads Scout. I'll check out their prices as well.

We were bought an innotab for dd's birthday - I wouldn't have chosen it myself but having said that they are pretty reasonably priced at the moment and she loves it. We have a samsung galaxy tab 3 - which I hate, we previously had a samsung galaxy note which was excellent (but we lost it in a burglary and an idiot in currys talked us into the tab 3 saying it was as good). My SIL has a hudl and it seems a very good option, not as expensive as a samsung/ipad but not as basic as the innotab.

My daughter has the Samsung Galaxy Tab.. I say "she" has it - it was actually a present to me from DH just before our wedding last year but I don't think I've ever been allowed to play it without it being taken off me by sticky toddler fingers! Lol

She'll be 3 next week and she can use it like a pro. My almost two year old is pretty good on it too.

We brought Logan a tablet for Christmas.
Was £50 from Asda.
Cyclone Oddysey or something, didn't want to get him an expensive one as he is only 2 this one is great, he has lots of apps downloaded from the google play store which we downloaded for him :)

I got a kindle fire hd for christmas and I absolutely love it! I've also got an ipad but I actually prefer the kindle. They are also only £90 on amazon at the moment which is about a third of the price of the equivalent ipad.

We got a kids bumper case for it which keeps its nice and safe for when LO uses it https://www.amazon.co.uk/MOCREO-Pro...d=1420624648&sr=8-3&keywords=Kindle+kids+case

Also if you sign up to amazon prime (it works out about £6 - £7 a month) you get loads of videos, box sets etc, similar to net flix and you can download them onto your device so LO can watch then even if you don't have wifi, like in the car etc.

I also like the freetime feature, it's means your LO can have their own profile and you get set limits on contents, screen time etc

We've gotta tesco hudl which is ideal for a toddler it's quitw thick so easier for little hands to hold. I'd never let my toddler have an.ipad they would brake it or drop it I rekon.
