Did any of you have to tell midwives to not put disposable on bubs? One of my friends said as soon as she had bubs they took her put a disposable on her, wrapped her and gave her back. I'd be miffed! Any experiences?

My hospital provides cloth nappies and puts cloth on automatically. I hadn't thought of that ahead of time to ask not to put a disposable on so I was quite pleased. If your hospital doesn't do cloth though you may want to mention it.

I think it depends on your hospital and your wishes. At mine, if at all possible they give you your baby to hold before he/she is wrapped in anything. You have the baby, they chuck it on your chest and then cover you up. So no time for a disposable. With my first LO, after I'd fed LO the midwife helped OH take LO and talked him through putting a nappy on her. It was a hospital provided sposie for her as we didn't use cloth from birth but if we'd wanted to that would have been fine - OH just would have said. With my second, I fed LO and then OH got me the nappy bag and I put a cloth nappy on her while she was still lying on me. I don't think the midwives were even in the room at that point.

So I would find out what your hospital's policy is - do they go for skin to skin? If so, you'll have baby straight away if all is well. If they don't, you can specify that you want it anyway and you can also tell them about nappies. They may want you or OH to put a cloth nappy on though, if they're not used to them. Just make sure to have everything laid out where they will put the nappy on - they won't be wasting time rooting through your bag for you.

^^^
I had skin to skin for nearly 2 hours first, then the mw took DD, weighed her etc and put a nappy on her while I was getting stitched up. Wasn't even aware that they were doing it til she was given back to me with a huge terry bum :).

Can you write a birth plan? Maybe put it in there if you plan of cloth nappying from birth?

Awesome advice thanks so much ladies! Really appreciate it :)

Really depends from hospital to hospital. Where I'm giving birth you are with your baby all the time and you are responsible for changes, feedings, clothing it etc, so pretty much it is up to you what diaper/nappy the baby wears. If baby needs special care and is separated from mom then she/he wears disposables.
You must call them and ask them.

Midwife didnt put a nappy on DD til id had a long time with skin-skin, delivered placenta and was stitched and had fed :) Only put it on because they clothed her as we were worried she'd get cold x

I had a Caesarian but Robyn was placed naked on my chest while they stitched me. When we went to recovery they asked if I wanted them to nappy her, but as she had done a big wee on the surgeon as soon as she came out, and hadn't yet fed, I didn't want to let go long enough for them to put a nappy on her!

If you don't want a disposable, provide and easy to use AIO cloth diaper for newborn to the nurse before delivery. Ours did, but as soon as we changed her, so switched. One disposable wasn't going to hurt her.

I've written a birth plan which states ill be wanting all in one cloths to be used :)

I don't know if you've ever SEEN meconium poop but yccckkkk...that stuff wasn't going to TOUCH my cloth nappies! :haha:

My hospital also put her in cloth directly after birth but also provided sposies for the few days afterwards. I loved seeing her in a little mini cloth for the first time, so cute! They didn't even need to pin it, just tucked it in, nawww they are so tiny!

So hmmm yeh think about if you want meconuim poop stains on your pretties! (We are in cloth 99% of the time now except o/night but while she had terrible tummy problems so i didn't wanna deal with sloppy poop tbh...!!)

This has nothing to do with the post and everything to do with that nappy your baby is wearing in your picture- I NEED ONE!! I'm in Aus too, where did you get it!!?:happydance:

Thank you - I made it :D. My second ever nappy I made even.

There are loads of WAHMs who do rainbow ruffles, if you can't nab one try to get on a custom list? I did my ruffles with minky and they're lush. Are you in Australia?

Yes I'm in Sydney, any recommendations?

Rufflebums Modern Cloth Nappies is good. My only purchased ruffles ate from her. Sew Mumma is a new maker who does great work too, and being new her custom spot will be short I think. Oops scratch that - just noticed her list is closing tomorrow and she has 20 names down.

You do make a good point hehe! I'm sure ill be stubborn as always then regret it. But I'll never admit it ;) isn't that what women do?

I just googled meconium... Might buy a few emergency terry towellings for those early poops ;)

LOL seriously I couldn't believe it when i saw it, like vegemite or liquid tar EW. The middy changed my daughters first nappy and whilst if I had never changed a nappy that would have upset me, I have changed thousands so was thrilled to not have to deal with that stuff HAHAH!

I don't think cloth is that hard with a newbie if you have a healthy, normal newborn. A high needs bub or a sick bub might be a bit trying. But I am all for cloth so i think anyone who does it from birth is brilliant and saving our earth! I hope to cloth from birth for my next few, depending on what they are like (if they're a repeat of my daughter though I might think twice haha)

We cloth nappied from day one - and never had an issue with meconium stained nappies. We even forgot liners a couple of times, which was obviously when there was the biggest production of meconium ;) and they didn't stain either (though it was fun removing it from the non-linered nappies). My mw asked where my nappies were and we just handed her a cloth bum, she didn't question it just put it straight on, then said that it was lovely to see a cloth bottomed newborn, and that she was really impressed with the ease of them (totsbots easyfits). That was a homebirth though, so maybe it's different in hospital/BC.
