Hi ladies

I wonder if any of you could give some advice - my mum is a nurse and I normally direct all my health concerns to her, but I can't get hold of her today - arghh!

Alex had his MMR 10 days ago and has been fine until now. He's been developing a cold over the past few days, but then so have I - lots of bugs going around here just now.

Today though, he felt very warm to the touch (especially one ear which was red hot) and I've measured his temp several times in both ears this afternoon at 39.5 - eek. I've given him calpol and stripped him down to his vest. I'm trying to get him to drink plenty of water. Normally he'd be playing at this time of the day, but I've sat him in front of the telly watching Ballamory so he doesn't make himself any warmer.

Is there anything else I could/should do? I don't see any rash anywhere. I'll keep checking his temp but what should I do if it gets any higher? He doesn't seem distressed at all, just a bit quieter/sleepier than usual. Oh god I hate it when he gets unwell :(

Thanks in advance.

the nurse told me jake could have a bit of temperature about two weeks after the jab. also told me he could get swollen lumps on the sides of his throat. x

My LO had a temp of 39.7 when she reacted to the mumps part of the MMR.

We had to give Paracetamol AND Ibuprofen alternately, cool LO down with a warm bath, gently adding cool water but definitely not in a cool bath.

We had to take her temp every 2 hours over night, luckily we had an ear thermometer so could do it while she slept. If it was over 38 we had to wake her, give more ibuprofen and offer water.

Hi
When the girls are poorly we alternate Ibuprofen and paracetamol so they have always got one of them in their system at a peak. As you said ensure he has plenty of fluid and keep checking his temp- contact dr if you are worried xxx

That's perfectly normal and you're doing the right thing. I was told that Clara could get a temp and a rash about 10-14 days after her MMR shot. She didn't get a temp, but did develop a rash which went away after a few days.

Yep it is more common than you are told by the nurses. My DD got a temp AND rash exactly 10 days after the MMR. It went after a day or two. Just kept giving her calpol. My friend's little boy had the same. :flower:

Ruby was so ill after her mmr...she was covered from head to toe in a rash and had flu like symptoms...

The information sheet my HV gave me said that they can produce symptoms up to 6 weeks after. They can come and go as the vaccination goes through the body so the first to appear was measles part, then mumps part then rubella (I think).

Calpol and Nurofen, less layers and keep an eye on him, you're doing everything you can.

Thank you everyone. He's cooled down a bit now with the calpol and is sleeping in light clothes and a light sleeping bag. He's been really restless since we put him to bed but I think that's down to his horrible molars coming in more than anything else (his hands are always in his mouth when we go in to settle him, and teething gel is doing the trick to help settle him back to sleep again).

I'll take his temp again before I go to bed. He's developing a serious dislike to the ear thermometer. As soon as he spies it he'll do anything to cover his ears and make it virtually impossible to take a good reading! Hopefully I'll have better luck when he's properly asleep....

Thanks again.

Nolan ran high fevers for 3 days about 12 days past vaccine and then developed a rash on the 4th day (no pain or scratching with the rash though!)
