This has probably been asked before but can a normal TENS machine be used for child birth labour pains, my father in law has one and i was going to borrow, but reading through pregnancy magazines has confused me, there seems to be special ones for labour? Are these any differnet from normal machines? Can i just use a normal one or do i have to buy a special one? Are they any good anyway? Any help and opinions much appreciated :)

Hello -
I'm not sure about other Tens machines, but I would imagine they all work in roughly the same way? But to be on the safe side I would probably hire one that you know is definately fit for the job...
I hired a Mama tens from my local pharmacy, it cost about £27 I think and it was a god send for me as all my labour pain was in my back.
Im guessing the maternity ones come with specific shaped pads for the specific areas of your back to zap when you have a contraction.
My tens got me to 6cm, and then I went on to gas and air and a birthing pool.
I'm definitely going to hire one again for this next labour!
Hope this helps and all the best!

thanks thats very useful i may go to pharmacy and ask see what they say too perhaps?
