have just had a weekend parentcraft course, instead of weekly antenatal classes. have deicded to try a tens machine for labour. any ideas as to where to gt one, is it best to hire or buy?am 35 weeks at the mo. they all seem to differ, which is the best/cheapest???
all help/ideas welcome!

I have always heard about tens machines for labor but have not a clue to what it is. Can you explain it to me?

I would ring your maternity ward first hun. I have hired mine from the physiotherapy department at our hospital and all it has cost me is £5.00 for the pads. They ask you to write a cheque for £150 as a deposit but they do not cash this unless you don't bring it back when they ask (which is usually about 2 weeks after your due date, but if you are running over they allow you extra time).
Now I don't know if this is something unique to Cardiff and Vale Health Trust or if it is something on offer across the UK but it would be worth a call anyway surely!

I think Boots do them, I'd also ring your midwife, as mine told me I could hire one when I was at antenatal classes, hope this helps :)

I hired an elle tens from www.tenmachines.co.uk. I had lots of reccomendations for this particular machine. It cost £22.95 for 6 weeks and came quickly, free post and return.
I havent had to use it yet but very happy with the service so far

Hi Hun,

I have hired my Mama TENS machine from Boots. Be careful when buying them outright, especially from pharmacies, as most of them are for back pain and are not to be used in pregnancy.

I had a TENS from Boots with my last pregnancy and it was amazing. I didn't have any other pain relief and was amazed at how easy labour was. I think the important thing to remember is as soon as you start getting contractions - start using it straight away.

corrie anne TENS stands for Transcutaneous electrical nerve stimulation. It is a little machine with wires attached with 4 pads on the ends which stick on your back. The machine sends pulses of low-current electricity through the wires. The pulses are so gentle that they're barely noticeable.

The idea is that the electrical pulses will interfere with pain signals that are sent from your back towards your brain. This should relieve pain of labour.
Basically, when you get a contraction, you push the switch on the little machine, beginning at zero and working your way up the more painful the contractions get.

I should also mention that a TENS cannot be used in water for obvious reasons, so it will have to be removed before a water birth.

Yes make sure you get the labour tens from Lloyds, its £29
They do cheaper ones but you cant use them for labour

We want another bub so figured it made sense just to buy one. Got a mama tens my time which is £40 to hire generally for £53 (+FREE DELIVERY) from Chemist Direct. It arrived the next day!
