Hey ladies,

Well my lo is 10 weeks old and has been on infant gaviscon for the last 3 weeks for reflux.

It was working a great and she was like a different baby, we could even lay her down flat and she just wasn't ever sick! Anyone asked how she was doing and I'd say she's fantastic, doing great, problem all sorted.

I should have kept my mouth shut cos I think I've tempted fate!

She is almost back to what she was like before starting on the gaviscon!

She's bringing up her milk again, getting awful sicky hiccups, generally being unsettled after a feed and just not feeding as well.

She only feeds small amounts anyway and we give her 4oz bottles but she generally only takes 3oz so she's always had just the one sachet in her bottle. But I've read that once they go over 10lb in weight they should go up to 2 sachets. I had her weighed yesterday and she's now 10lb 9oz but should I be putting 2 sachets in her 4oz bottle? Aren't you only meant to use 2 sachets in a larger amount of milk?

Should I take her to the dr and explain that the gaviscon seems to have stopped working and see if he suggests any meds?

Really appreciate anyone's help!

Yes, my daughter was exactly the same. Gaviscon helped for about 1-2 weeks and then she went back to how she was before. She was then prescribed Ranitidine. Tbh it didn't really help for her but then she was diagnosed with CMPI so I'm not sure she ever had reflux really but we still give her the Gaviscon. My sisters baby had reflux and was also on Ranitidine and it really helped him, plus there is also medication starting with a D that Dr's can prescribe. x

Gaviscon helped Lola for 2wks and then just completely stopped working,we were prescribed ranitidine alongside the gaviscon and that was our miracle cure.finally at 8months Lola's reflux dissapeared.good luck hun xx

Thank you, I'm glad you now have your lo's problem under control.

I've heard of ranitidine, omneprazole, domperidone and a special formula for reflux called enfamil.

If I go back to the drs I will mention all of the above but I'd love to hear from people who have actually tried any of them. I know all lo's are different and what works for one might do nothing for another but it's great to be armed with knowledge as I have a feeling the dr will just fob me off.

Yes I think you should defo take her Drs and explain whats happening they may just offer you something better, have you tried keeping her in an upright position after feeds?

Hiya,

Yeah we're back to doing everything we were doing pre-gaviscon! Holding upright for feeding and then for an hour after each feed, stopping often during feeds, laying her down at a tilt.

Nothing's working. Think it may be a call to the drs then.

I don't understand how it can be working great and then just stop!

As others have said, take her back to the doctors, they might refer her to a paediatrician? I've had a look at my lo's gaviscon sachet and it says 2 doses to be mixed in no less than 225ml of milk which is about 8oz I think? x

Well I've phoned the doctors and am waiting for a call back as they had no available appointments today. But the dr that is calling back is the same one that prescribed the gaviscon so hopefully he won't just fob me off.

I phoned gaviscon too to check on the dosage and they confirmed that 2 sachets would be what a baby over 10lb would have BUT only in 225ml of milk or more. As my lo is only taking a max of 125mls then she can't have another sachet.

I just want to get this sorted and really hope he'll try her on something else, I hate seeing her like this, she's so unsettled poor little thing.

My lo was put on gaviscon and it worked for a few weeks then stopped. I then chose to try sma staydown formula and docters agreed and it was my miracle cure I didn't really want her on medication may be worth a try? But I haven't tried any other medication xx

Thanks, we'd already tried comfort milk and the stay down milk before going to the doctors and getting the gaviscon.

The stay down milk seemed to make it ten times worse, and the comfort milk made things marginally better for a few days then it was worse but also got diarohea on it.

Gaviscon never worked for my boy, his reflux is silent though. We wre perscribed ranitidine and it worked for 3 days then stopped. Dose was upped and it did nothing, its now been upped to the max dose for his weight and I think there maybe a slight improvement.

We are back to see a paed either tomoz or fri to see whats next if the ranitidines not working xx

Hope you get your lo's reflux under control. It's so hard. I hate seeing her like this.

Still waiting on the call from the doctors, it's been over an hour now so I'm hoping it's soon!

Well the lovely doctor we saw before just called me back.

I explained everything and he said that ranitidine is the next thing to try out so he's working out her exact dosage required based on her weight and will have a prescription ready for me tomorrow. Turns out his youngest daughter (7 months old) also suffers with reflux so he was very sympathetic about it as he and his wife have been through just about every possible medication there is for reflux and she's now on a combination of things. He said to give the ranitidine a month and if no improvement then we'll go onto the next step.

So happy I called now and just really hope it makes a difference to Skye, I want my happy baby back!

oh no. reflux can be so hard! my daughter is on ranitidine 3x a day. the dr just upped her dosage. now she sleeps alot and barely wakes to eat....i dont know if she is feeling better and just wanting to sleep or if drowsiness is a side effect she is experiencing....

does your daughter spit up alot?

Yeah, she seems to always be spitting up. When the gaviscon was working it was great though, she never brought up a thing!

I've just finished feeding her like 2 seconds ago and she's already got that hiccupy sicky sound in her throat like she's about to bring it up. I can hear her swallowing it back down. She's usually so settled after a feed but right now she's constantly fidgeting and restless.

It's so horrible, I really hope she grows out of it soon!

You can give the gaviscon mixed as a paste and give it through a syringe. That way you don't need to worry about the amount of milk. You are meant to give it just after a feed if used that way. We have used 2 sachets for our guy given in the syringe as I can't pump that much milk.

hey hon we had this - should be 2 sachets in an 8oz bottle - dont worry about wasting the milk - we had gone back a step and then tried ranatadine but it made her soo much worse - once we upped to 2 sachets in 8oz shes been content again
