Albert has an ear infection and it is disgusting. It looks like thick green snot coming out of it  he had antibiotics which cleared it up for a day or two and then it came back :(. He has got drops now but everytime i put them in i have to scoop out a ton of the gloop so that the drops actually go in. The weird thing is he doesn't seem to be in any pain.

Has anyone else had to deal with something like this? Will the drops clear it up?

sorry i havent had to deal with this.at least its not causing him any discomfort.the drops should help but ear infections can take a while to clear up

Ive never experienced this to be honest....but surely the antibiotics shouldve done the trick?
Hes not off his food or grumpy or anything though?

Get better soon Albert!

That's what i thought... he had a full course

He is grumpy, but not gone off his food. I'm just not sure if i should take him back to the doctor!

If its a viral ear infection, no amount of antibiotics will help. They prescribe them incase it is bacterial as the symptoms are the same. Ewan had similar, although it was more yellowy/waxy gunk. It took about 6 weeks for him to get better, although now (3 months later) he can still be found jamming his finger in his ear to help relieve the pain/pressure. The best thing I found for his viral infection was a steamer in his bedroom - it helps break down the congestion in the eustachian tubes to help them hear better and relieve pressure. Hope your lo gets better soon! x

I would definately take him back to the surgery and if you dont feel comfortable seeing the same GP then just ask to see a different one and get a different perspective on it.

Ive had to do that cos i wasnt happy with what the first GP suggested was the issue!

I would take him back tbh, the gunky stuff sounds a bit excessive

Thank you. How do they know if it's viral? He has a really snotty nose too. In fact, my mum is convinced it's his snotty nose overflowing and coming out of his ears

They can't really tell before hand, but the big give-away is when a course of antibiotics doesn't clear it up. It means they haven't worked so it must be viral. I would take him back if I were you to double check - although they can't prescribe anything for a viral infection, they can syringe the ears regularly to help get rid of the gunk. Ewan needed this as it was making his ear drum swell and they thought it might burst. I had this as a child, and it is excrutiatingly painful so I did everything I could to try and prevent it, but you can't 'cure' and it has to run its course. x

i personally would take him back the excessive gunk doesnt sound good, they may need to give him a different type of medicine for it

also ive been given stuff for an ear infection that didnt work when i was younger, after a week dad took me back and they gave me something else which cleared in it 2 days.
