Talia Grace arrived on 7/2 at 5.28, weighing 2.88 kgs (about 5 lb 12ozs) and 50cm.
Birth Story: - Long!!!!
Quick background, last pregnancy I had complete placenta previa and was robbed of the last two months of my pregnancy on strict bedrest, constant hospital stays of several weeks at a time and loads of anxiety and pre-natal depression, with a medically planned c section at 36 wks. This time round I wanted just NORMAL and was desperate for a VBAC as this is my last pregnancy!!
Well it was a fabulous pregnancy, despite nausea every day right to the end (like last time!) and running round after a toddler. On 6/2 I went to hospital as had been contracting for over a week and finally they were every 4 mins - got sent straight home she said I was 0 cm and totally closed!! Was mortified!! I had been so sure lol but they petered out to every 10 mins so it definitely wasn´t anything!
Anyway, next day the same, with contractions about every 10 mins but decided to ignore it as it didn´t meant anything!! Managed a half hearted semi longish (ok not that long, but more than I had done in ages) walk, and bounced on my ball for an hour while watching One Born Every Minute (jealously I might add!). Woke at 3.30am,…… now I realized the day before had been nothing!! The paaaaaaaaaaaaaaaain!!! These were every 4 mins but whereas previously I had a shower to help the pain, this time a shower did nothing just meant I was wet and in agony lol!!
At 4am we got our 21 month old daughter up and headed to the hospital. Did a handover to our friend at a roundabout on the way and waved goodbye to our LO for the next 3 days. At the hospital I was 2cm and they were only admitting me because I had been there the previous day. The midwives didn’t say anything but I saw lots of looks between them like I was fussing and being a wuss cos I was in so much pain. Occasionally I cried out but mostly tried to breath through it but the contractions were so strong and as one was winding down the next one would be starting already. I couldn´t believe the pain I was in and they didn’t have me on the monitor so I could tell they didn’t believe me either lol. Finally they said I was 3cm at 8am and took me next door to the active labour room for the epidural. They said they would have to give me drugs to keep the contractions coming as the epidural makes them slow down and weakens the strength of them.
Because they were doing the epidural they put me on the monitor, that’s when everything changed. Faces were suddenly shocked and sympathetic -finally they believed me!! The monitor was going mental and clearly showed the contractions just kept coming and didn’t finish before the next one started. They could barely get the epidural in as there was no time between contractions – I was having them as they were putting it in and it was the hardest thing I have ever done in my life not to move – I kept telling myself I am in the car and don’t want to scare my daughter so say and do nothing, she will be scared if you scream!! Seriously only thing I could do! The epidural was lush oh my gosh oh my gosh oh my gosh!!!!!!  After a week of contractions and two nights no sleep I then slept on and off for the next 8 hrs. It was heaven. The irony though now all the midwives as they changed shifts would come and be saying and in that room, go and look at her monitor, we haven’t given her any drugs to keep her contractions coming after the epidural, but look at the monitor, look at the contractions! Apparently at one point a group of student midwives traipsed down to look!! Well I was vindicated it wasn´t normal the strength and frequency of the contractions I was having and getting to 3cm in 4 hours with no gas and air just breathing through these contractions was an amazing feat!!
LOs heart beat started dropping once I was at 8cm (175, then with a contraction down to 72) and her head was in a strange position, so she wasn’t advancing down the birth canal, she was still high up. The gynochologist said while we aren’t in a hurry yet he started talking about a C section and did I want to be sterilised at the same time and waving consent forms around. I looked at the midwife who had been there at the start and now was back on shift and there at the end and said I want a natural birth please help me. She said ok, don’t worry, sent another midwife off to distract the gynochologist and get him out of the room and then I told her the position I wanted to be in to push better. We tried it for 20 mins and the gynochologist was told I had done really well and the head had moved down (it wasn’t really but he went off satisfied to the rest room over the hall and left us to it) half an hour later I had really done it with the help of these amazing midwives and the gynachologist came back to supervise the birth in the delivery room but again let the midwives get on with it! They held a mirror, I watched it all and watching her come out was amazing! She absolutely was worth all the agony at the start and the lush middle and fab ending made it an awesome positive experience in my opinion!!
6 days later she has regained and passed her birth weight!!
