I went to the doctors today as something "down there" just doesn't seem right, strange smell and different discharge than normal, so I went to the docs.

The first thing I said to her was that I was 20 weeks pregnant and she said she'd need to do some swabs which was fine, but I don't see why she needed to use a speculum! It bloody hurt! I'm worried now that she has damaged my cervix, is it possible and should I be worried? The discomfort was short and it's fine now, feels no different, just a bit worried.

Have any of you guys had swabs taken and was a speculum used?

The funny thing was, I suspected BV because of the strange smell but the doctor thinks it looks more like thrush, but I have no external itching or anything like that, it must be very internal.

Have to wait til Thursday now for the results. If I had suspected thrush I wouldn't have even gone to the docs, the only reason I went was because I thought it was BV which can lead to prem labour.

I had one yesterday and yes they hurt like hell. I cramped for a good 2 hours after but all is fine now. My Dr wasn't much help either. My discharge smells strangely sweet so she is treating for yeast while she waits for the other swabs to come back.

i had swabs taken much earlier than u at about 6 weeks and a speculum was used which surprised me too but its often needed to keep things open down there for when they take the high swabs.
i was fine afterwards and i very much doubt this would damage your cervix in anyway, the way i look at it is its a thin cotton bud and if its safe to have sex without worrying about cervical damage then im sure this is too!
the speculum itself would have only been at the entrance too
HTH

Thank you guys, I'm sure you're right. I just seem to worry about everything now! It's so tiring.

Ahh I didn't realise the speculum didn't go all the way up, the pain made it feel like it did though! But that makes sense.

xx

Hey I had a speclum last week and it was realy uncomfrotabel and I bled for 4 days after but my doc assured me this was normal that although I didint have thrush jsut a small infection? Did she give you anything to take?
She gave me a vaginal dose of medication to literally push up myself but as I was still a bit shaking from theblood I didnt take it im waiting to go back to doc to get an oral dose...

I have to wait until Thursday for the lab results to come back before they can confirm if it is thrush or BV or something else. Such a long wait. If it's something bad I will get a call sooner than that though. I used some live yogurt on it yesterday and it has made a real improvement though with the smell and discharge (sorry TMI) so it may clear up by itself, I do hope so! xx

Hi!

I had a speculum used when i was about as far gone as you (i think) and was tested for BV and didnt have any problems with them using this, as far as i know they are safe in pregnany otherwise they wouldnt use it i suppose! My results came back with BV and was given a weeks course of antibiotics which cleared it up and touchwood its not come back x

yeah the speculum literally holds u open at the entrance hun, i know how uncomfortable they are i had a bad experience with one when i was very young and now i tense up every time i have to have one used on me which makes it even more painful! they do feel like they're goin up further than they are

I had one around 10 weeks and yes it hurt but it can't harm your cervix in anyway it doesn't go in enough!

this may be too much information, but i think i have thrush and went to the chemist s to buy some cream only to be told that i needed to go to the doctor who will then prescribe me the same cream!!! this to me seems to be a waste of time!! TOO MUCH INFO coming up---- its not an inside thrush but is outside, i have had this before being pregnant and just used caneston and everythign was fine. any idea why i would have to go the doctors?

Also sorry for ignorance but what is BV??

thanks

I've had TWO in the last two weeks and it hurt like all hell. I thought she was tearing me open. I don't ever remember it feeling like that when I wasn't pregnant. There is no risk to cervix its to check also if cervix is closed.

BV stands for Bacterial Vaginosis, it is an overgrowth of bacteria whereas thrush is an overgrowth of fungus in the vagina. Thrush is cleared up with anti-fungals and BV is cured by a course of anti-biotics. Sometimes the symptoms can be very similar so they get mistaken for each other - like today I thought I had BV and the doctor thinks it looks more like thrush.

Possibly if you are visibly pregnant then the chemist might have thought to be on the safe side they refer you to docs instead of self-medicating just incase you have mistaken it for something else?
