LO has discovered his hands this week! He's in his swing sleeping and still trying to suck on his thumb, ends up with a fist half in his mouth but he's putting some effort into it. It's adorable. It's ok isn't it? I was one of those kids who sucked their thumb for way too long so I'm wondering how long I should let him do this for.

Anyone else's kiddos major thumb suckers?

Ah my LO began to find his thumb at that age too and once he got it sussed he slept through the night. (by 9 weeks) :happydance:
I have to admit we found it so cute and funny when he first began trying to find his thumb...... He would get his fist in his mouth then slowly release fingers till he had his thumb..... So cute and funny to see. It took him a while to master it, and even now when very upset he 'forgets' he can suck his thumb and crys hitting himself in his face with his fists lol....... Oddly though he can get that thumb in with extreme precission when we are trying to dress him and need his hands free :flower: little monkey lol.
My LO now loves his thumb and right now i am not bothered by it...... I must admit i think it is stopping him rolling sometimes...... Since he has his thumb in, gets halfway over and then stops to suck his thumb and i think his arm gets in the way of rolling fully.... But he will get there one day.
The 'benefits' of thumb sucking for us are great and means LO will self settle when he goes down at night / wakes in the night, i will let LO do it till he is about three if needed then try and stop it ( though don't know how we will do that).

LO loves to shove her fist in her mouth, like a lady... :haha: Babies are born with the sucking reflex and it comforts our LOs. Absolutely no harm. I'm not sure when would be a good time to break this habit (if it develops into a habit at all) but for the next few months I'd say let him suck and discover his hands all he wants.

My LO has just started sucking her thumb too! I don't mind, she won't take a dummy and it soothes her as pp said. The only thing I have to watch for it sometimes she nearly claws her eyes out by accident as the rest of the hand seems to cover her whole face!

Xx

My LO loved her thumb until she started being able to get the binky in by herself. Now the binky is her obsession (only gets it at nap/bed or when super cranky but won't sleep). I'm hoping that the fact that she will go back and forth between the two will make it easier to break in the future.

Benji sucks his thumb all the time! It's his go-to response for almost every situation lol! I don't mind at all, most babies stop of their own accord and if he carriers on until his teens...well, there could be worse habits! I'd rather not deny him of the comfort or made an issue out if it, it's not harmful!

My daughter sucks hers too. I think it's so so cute, especially when she tries to suck BOTH at once! It helps her settle herself especially since we took the dummy away

My 2yr old is always sucking his thumb and my LO has just started sucking his. I am just letting them do it if they want. My sis sucked her thumb for years so don't mind and won't stop them. X

My LO loves to suck his thumb and began doing so at about 2 months old. I asked his pediatrician and she said it's OK if they do it, it's a natural way of calming themselves down. It makes them feel safe and secure. It's better then using a pacifier because it never gets lost and all you need to do is wipe it down with a wipe if his little hands get dirty or wash it with soap/water. Much better then spending hours looking for a pacifier or sterilizing them every night. I think it's super cute too. :D
