Hi ladies,

I've seen this has been asked a few times!!

I visited 2 hair dressers today and both have said its safe for them to colour my hair as long as I use a semi rather than a permanent! I always thought you could only have foils as they don't touch the scalp though :-/

Im sure they are perfectly correct being hairdressers but just wanted to see everyone else's thoughts on the matter :)

Thanks. X

Ive always hear its not good. I think i would maybe confirm what they say with my dr.. just cause i wouldnt want to take any chances. I dont think they would make that up or anything but just to be double sure.

I talked to my doctor and he said that it is perfectly safe for me to do an all over color, (or really whatever I want). He did tell me that being more sensitive that my scalp might itch more than normal (which it did) and that if the smell got to me to just step outside for a few. My hairdresser uses Paul Mitchel products that do not really smell, so this was not a problem for me. I have no roots and feel great about it :) That is just my doctors advice tho... I know my sister, who used a different OBGYN also got her hair done through the course of both her pregnancies as her doctors said that it was fine also.

i think it comes down to whether or not you will feel like you will blame yourself if something goes wrong in the future. i wrestled with whether or not to exercise during the tww and finally decided that although id blame the crap out of myself if something went wrong .. it was still a "risk" i was willing to take. im sticking with 200 mg of caffeine again another "risk" im willing to take

Its perfectly fine! Your pretty much out of the 1st tri anyway. I've dyed my hair and my OB said it was perfectly fine. If you still have doubts just call your OB. They'll tell you its ok and that there is no risk to baby!

The issue is the (ammonia) fumes, as long as you do it in a well ventilated area you will be fine.

Thanks ladies :) there are such mixed reactions about it all... I think I'm going to wait and speak to my midwife about it first! Part of me just thinks if the hairdressers have reassured me it's fine to just do it, but if something was to happen I know I would only blame myself!!

So for now, I'm gonna hold out :)

Damn Roots :-/ xx

Fumes are the problem. You don't absorb anything through the scalp, not that would get into your blood stream anyway. If you did then hair colouring would be unsafe for everyone, not just pregnant women. As long as the room is well ventilated it should be fine.

You might find your skin is more sensitive than usual.
