Hi,

Has anybody had / got a baby with tongue tie and is bottle fed!! i can find lots of advice for BF babies with TT but nothing on bottle fed baby.

It seems that people assume that problems only occur when brestfeeding. my baby girl (10 weeks) was diagnosed by a HV when a few days old. i did try BF but failed, maybe due to this looking back. but she was happy with a bottle so i passed on the chance to pay £150 for a private app!! :dohh:

I think now we have problems!! she is gaining weight but takes forever to finish feeds, so much so its turned into a feeding frenzy (alldaylong) she gets very fustrated and cant seem to latch on the bottle alot of the time, followed by lots of spitting and wind:cry:Also he wont take to a dummy at all and i no she is going to be tumb stucker because her hands are already in her mouth for comfort. (would rather dummy)

Just needed advice, we have a app in jan.. will she be offered the snip? should i take it???

Thanks

I can't offer advice from a FF perspective but Melody is BF and had a tongue tie which wasn't diagnosed until she was 9 weeks ish. She went to the tongue tie clinic and they snipped her tongue. Honestly, like jabs or anything it wasn't nice but she was most annoyed about having her head held still. I fed her straight away afterwards and she did cry but she was fine. It took her about 3 days to properly 're-learn' to BF so little one might be the same with the bottle but she is like a different babe now. She feeds calmly and happily most of the time. HTH :)

ETA - she did need calpol that day and the next as she was very grizzly. With them being older than standard I think it's a little more uncomfortable.

Thanks,

think i will go with it. seems the symptoms are the saame as Bf baby and if it helps in the long run:thumbup:

my little man is tongue tied and is FF, he was never BF as he was in SCBU, he has the TT CTN bottles and teats, he will get it cut in the new year.
He was having Milupa standard teats in hospital and those teats arent reusable, he needed a large base to kind of latch onto, we have now got him on TT Closer to Nature FAST FLOW teats as he doesnt need too much energy to get milk, he also makes a funny noise when feeding sometimes but i think thats when he isnt latched on too good. He has an appt for 13th Jan to get his snipped

Joseph had a 96% tie and the midwife arranged for him to have it snipped at 6 days old as I was breastfeeding. But to be fair, even at 96% it never really interfered with his feeding. But after he had it snipped he developed oral thrush (which the midwife said could be due to the snip. Not sute how though) and he totally refused the breast so had to put him on bottles. The only prob we had (which isn't really that much of a problem) was that he took a long time with his feeds. (a little bit off topic but,) the midwife said it would be better to get it snipped, not just for feeding reasons, but for when they get older as it can affect things like speech, licking an ice-cream and kissing! I said 'I don't care about the kisssing! he won't be kissing anyone except me!!!' :)
None of this really answered your question did it? Sorry :)

My friend's baby was born tongue-tied and was snipped before leaving the hospital when she was 2 days old. She didn't like being snipped but it was really no worse than when babies receive a shot. Being tongue-tied runs in my friend's wife's family. I guess she had it mildly and it was never a problem until she was a preteen and her permanent teeth came in. The flap of skin under her tongue would get caught in her bottom teeth and get pinched and it was very annoying/painful. She was snipped as an adolescent and doesn't recall it being a big deal.

My LO was tongue tied and ended up being FF'ed because of it (took 6 weeks to sort out). He never latched and found bottles very hard too. I think it's because it is so much more hard work for them to suck with a TT. It would take him forever to finish a bottle and he would end up falling asleep with frustration. It was so much better after the snip - he fed fine. So I'd def get the snip if you think it's interfering with his feeding. It takes seconds and as others have said you can avoid problems later in life too :hugs:

HI hun, my dd has a very mild case of tongue tie and my mw told me she had it as soon as she was born as she couldn't latch on very well.

We had to stay in hospital for 48rs after my dd was born (waters went before I started with contractions) and she couldn't latch on. I had a few mw's try and help me to bf and we couldn't do it. I also tried expressing and couldn't keep up with her as she was so hungry. I asked for a bottle and for us it was the best thing ans she's been a happy little girl since I made that decision. We've not had any problems with her sucking on her bottle.

When she was 5 days old we went and saw a specialist, who after checking her over said he was happy for her not to have her tt dealt with as it is so mild, but to see how she does with learning to talk and if we feel there are any problems there to contact him and we'll get it done.

Personally, I think if your dd is struggling to feed and the dr thinks it's the best thing to do. I would get it sorted out now, rather then later. Good luck hun and let us know how you get on.

Thanks everyone.
My Girl has her appointment on the 6th so will let uall know how we get on....

I had Archie's done the day he turned three months. He had to have a GA though, but was only down in theatre for literally ten minute..... and he has been a different baby since then. Beforehand he was a little bit of a nark and quite bad tempered but now he's a really happy little boy :)

I know it's not the same, but my LO was 100% Tongue tied. He had it snipped when he was a few days old, and it really wasn't a big deal for him. I think it's slightly different with your LO being older though.
xx

what does it mean when they are 100% tongue tied?

The skin-flap-thingymibob was right at the very, very tip of his Tongue, so when he cried his Tongue made a heart shape!
It definitely affected his feeding; he could not latch on at all - this could also be because he was a bit early too though.
xx

wonder if my son is 100% as his does that, i'll try and get a pic of it if you wouldnt mind looking, we have appt on 13th though :hugs:

Sorry to crash your thread hope its ok to post pics on here.

My LO was tongue tied too, she had hers clipped when she was about two weeks old, the procedure didnt bother her as she slept through it. Her tongue did something very similar to what you have posted Sar35 and my consultant said she had a very tight tongue tie, it can be hereditary (I'm tongue tied too but never had anything done and it does affect speech sometimes) MY LO is now FF and we tried to continue BF afterwards for a while however LO just struggled to latch (it didnt help that I have flat nipples too!) She even struggled with bottles initially but I just tried different bottles till we eventually found ones that suited her. I would definitely recommend getting it snipped just through my own personal experience.

funny you should say that as we discovered OH has got it too but never knew til Joes was found.. We read that it can cause probs with french kissing and licking ice cream and oh said he thought he couldnt stick his tongue out when kissing lol, he looked in the mirror and found it .... mad eh!

Hi my son has a tounge tie and is bottle fed. I was told that may have played somewhat of a part in our BF difficulties. My Dr. advised that as long as he can get his tounge past his lips than its fine and shouldn't cause any difficulties - she thought his was fine so it hasn't been done. BUT since that appointment I have been watching and I have never seen his tounge past his lips so I think my Dr (who is ALWAYS in a rush) may have shrugged off a tounge tie that should have been clipped long ago. I am going to ask our new pediatrician at the end of the month and am hoping poor LO wont need to get the snip (he'll be 4 month by that appointment!)- but we will if its in his best interest.
