My daughter's name is Violet. We're expecting another baby girl in March and are having a hard time agreeing on names. We both like Lucy, but I think I prefer it as a nn.

My husband doesn't like Lucia though, and Lucille isn't my style. Would Lucy as a nn for Lilian be too much of a stretch? Are Lilian and Violet too themey together?

its odd as their is no 'c' sound anywhere in the name

what about:

Lucerne
Lucinda
Lucille
Lucea
Lucelia
Lucianna

I don't think they sound themey at all, unless I'm missing something? I think they go nicely together :). I think using Lucy as a nn for Lilian is a stretch as all they have in common is starting with L, but then a nickname can be anything you want, it doesn't have to be a derivative of the given name :).

I don't think they are too themey although I do think Lucy is an odd nn for it, I think people would be more Inclined to use lily.

Both are lovely names x

Luciana is lovely, I don't think Lucy can be a nickname for Lilian. Lucy is a perfectly lovely name on its own though, I have a friend and a cousin named Lucy and both have Lucy on their birth certificates.

I disagree, a nickname is a nickname. Doesn't always gave to be relegated to your name. My only opinion about nicknames is that they are usually given after you meet the baby.......i can't imagine saying my unborn childs nickname will be such and such. Because after we meet she may smile alot and we may want to call her "smiley". Nicknames for me is something that mirrors the person. Now "short for" is different, ex. Persons name is Micheal so for short we call him "mike". I think that's why the above commenter said Lucy and Lilian dont go together. Overall I suppose everyone has there own formation of what a nickname is.do what you feel. I think Lucy is a cute nickname. And Lilian is more this generation which would work great for a birth name.

I agree that Lucy as a nickname for Lilian doesn't really work. But Lilian with Lily as a nickname is lovely, too, and I don't think it's too themey (I much prefer sibsets that 'match' anyway).

Lucy is great on its own, in my opinion. We considered it for our LO. I like names that have an opportunity for nicknames and you still get that with Lucy even though it's short (Lu, Luce).

I don't think Lucy really goes as a nn for Lilian either, it almost makes the Lillian pointless iykwim as it won't be used or really referred to?

Lucinda is an option or you could spell it differently, Lucie perhaps?

What it comes down to is how much you like Lucy, as the obvious choice is to just use it as it is. It's a lovely name and goes well with Violet x

I have a Ruby and Jade (non deliberate!) So I say its fine. People always compliment.

I wondered the same about my girls being Rosalie & ivy but it never comes up nobody makes the connection. Go with the name u love x

I don't care for Lucy as a nn for Lilian but I like Lucy as a stand alone name.

I agree with this. Sophies nicknames are Loafie and So So, not things I planned ahead of time!

Lucy stands alone as a proper first name to me. I like it.

I agree with most, Lucy is a lovely name, as is Lilian but I think using Lucy as a NN for Lilian is odd and most would be inclined to call her Lily Lil etc. if they were to shorten it. I don't see how it is too themey either.
