Hello everyone. This is my first time being on here so let me give you a brief history. I am 23 and have just been diagnosed with insulin resistance (IR). I was put on metformin xr 1,000 mg in October 2011 as well as birth control because I had a period for 9 straight months (I know it was horrendous!) I took the birth control until December 25, 2011 and then I went off of it because it was making me extremely sick. I am now currently on iron, prenatal, and metformin xr. Being this is my first round of metformin without the birth control, my question is if it has been effective for anyone? If you took 1,000 mg daily on metformin did it help you get pregnant and how long did you take it before you got a BFP? I appreciate any answers as I need reassurance because it's heartbreaking that there is a possibility I will never get pregnant.

I am also 23 and on Metformin since Sept 21st, 2011
I have had regular cycles of 16 days since I began Metformin. I am now 6 days late!

Anyone have any luck or a similar circumstance?

Hi felecia,

Metformin is used to treat insulin resistance...its another role in doing so is to regulate the menstrual cycles and ovulation....atleast from what i ve read 90% of patients treated with metformin will start having regular periods and ovulation within 4 to 6 weeks of starting metformin....
So ideally once u start having ur ovulation and periods regularly...there shudnt be any problems in conceiving...it mite take time depending on some factors like age and timing of intercourse etc...but u shud not worry if ur able to ensure that ur ovulating every month...
Ru tracking ur ovulation???

Btw I am also on metformin now...was put on metformin 1000mg last year to treat irregular cycles and insulin resistance...i started having regular cycles after one month....

I have not seen a BFP yet myself becos I ve started ttc recently....
Hope u got few doubts cleared...
All the best...

16 days cycles???
That seems to be really short isnt'it??/
Did u check with ur doctor??

I did try the ovulation tests, but I'm so new to this that I didn't know when I should try it, so I'm hoping that the metformin will help this cycle because this will be my first technical cycle since getting off birth control. If I have 28 day cycles (which is doubtful lol) I should start tomorrow... keep your fingers cross it doesn't and leads to a BFP :) All the luck to you on your trying journey! I'm ready for my trying to stop and finally succeed :)

16 day cycles do sound very short... that was what I basically had and was why I had to be put on birth control. I would talk to your doctor if possible.

I miscarried in August and was then diagnosed with PCOS. I never had any cycle issues (28 days) until I miscarried.
I was told it could take 3 months for my period to begin again and it took 3 days.

My doctor is well aware of my cycles. They are consistent and normal cycles which is why being 6 days late is new.
I was asking if anyone with Metformin experience has had similar circumstances.
I am POAS in the morning & crossing everything for a BFP.
I am terrified of the BFN because we are still so very hopeful.

The nausea and headaches are really kicking my butt the last few days. That is what gave my being pregnant away last time & I knew.
I'm praying it's the same but I pray I will make it full term with my rainbow

Well I'll keep everything crossed for you as well! I don't know if Metformin has done anything yet, but I was on a pd for 9 mths straight then was regular only while on birth control. I'm supposed to start my pd tomorrow but it doesn't act as if it's coming yet. I've had constant headaches and nausea as well. I'm also experiencing an extreme tiredness which I contribute to insomnia. I did have anemia but I got that under control now back to be tired again. In this passed week I've also had horrific teeth pain so I don't know what's going on. Hopefully we get our BFPs soon!!

Felecia- I have everything crossed AF doesn't make an appearance and we get beautiful BFP!
I don't think Thursday can get here quick enough!!

Lol, today is the day for me, but I'm not trying to get too excited. I have a prescription of provera on hand just in case it's just my lovely body being bull headed again. Going to try my best to wait a week and then test. I'm moving this upcoming weekend so hoping that will be able to keep my mind off of things for a little while. Good luck to you and keep me updated; *baby dust to you!*

I go to my gyno tomorrow. I don't know how to feel.
I'm a little blue tonight. I am fearing he will say it's PCOS related. I have never had irregular cycles until I got pregnant.

I just don't get it and it frustrates me.

Good luck tomorrow and keep us updated! I went to gyno today and they are having me take 2,000 mg metformin and 150 mg clomid this cycle. This is my last chance for an oral pill to ovulate... if I don't they are sending me to get injections. Really down tonight as well... but don't sweat it until you hear from your gyno (easier said than done though). *Baby dust to you and good luck!

I have Clomid in my medicine cabinet just waiting. I was hoping to conceive without it but we will see!
fingers crossed for us!!

hi felicia

i too have what drs call severe pcos and i could go a year without a period, i got married in 2010 and began to think about maybe having a baby so i thought i would do a check up where the dr told me that because of the ir and high blood pressure i should look into adoption bc no dr would help me conceive i was put back on metformin 2000mg a day and other meds and a little over a month later i got my BFP now that ended in an ectopic but am now on more baby friendly meds to control my high blood pressure and was put on insulin so that i can carry my next baby to term am now just waiting to get that BFP again (my reg dr and the ob i saw are helping me conceive ) so it can happen

i am keeping track of temps and doing opks but i hear they are not that accurate with pcos girls so who knows, i hope that you get that bfp soon thought fx for you

Thanks! I'm sorry about your loss :( It's horrible trying so hard only to have it taken away. I never was one that actually tried to OPKs b/c I was tired of getting negative everything lol. However, I have heard so many successes with metformin once they got on 1,500- 2,000 mg so I'm hoping now that they upped my dose then will be adding clomid that it will be my turn :) I really hope you get that BFP soon, as I know how hard it is to constantly see that BFN :( Thank you and lots of baby dust to you!!

Hi every1 I'm ttc as well on metformin but also provera for my periods. I'm 23 and I was diagnosed with pcos. Last june. I was givn provera to jumpstart my period then start metformin just 2mths ago. My cycles are usually 35 days with provera but now that I'm taking the metformin last mth was a 28 day cycle! So excited for that. I'm overweight so I'm tryna lose sum pds so the meds will work even better. I was prescribed clomid, tried it for 2mths and decided to jus wait till most of the weight is off. Good luck to every1 :)

Oh that's great news about the 28 day cycle!! Are you able to ovlulate on your own? I start Provera next week, but I've been on Metformin 1,000 mg since October. However,I was also on b/c pills, so I don't know if Metformin will help with anything yet. I am 2 days late, but maybe I'll have a 35 day cycle, or sometimes b/c pills can mess with you as well. I am overweight as well and found out I am insulin resistant. This is my last chance until injectibles (I took Clomid about 2 years ago with no result). However, I've been doing research and a lot of women with PCOS is Clomid resistant, I don't know if you ever talked to your dr about that? What I mean is a lot of PCOSers had to be put on Metformin 3-6 months before Clomid even worked because of their insulin levels etc. Fingers crossed for you!!
