Twins?

Please excuse me for the stupid question I'm about to ask....

Here's the deal... I've had 4 quick scans earlier in my pregnancy because I was transferred from the fertility clinic and they were extra cautious. I was told I had one baby but feared there would be two because twins run in both our families (even my hubby is a twin). I would love two babies... But at this point in my career... I can't imagine it. I did not go on any fertility meds... This pregnancy was a miracle after long term TTC.

The thing is... I'm huge. I'm only 18 weeks and some people are shocked that I'm not further along. I've only gained about 7lbs but my belly looks like I'm 7-8 months pregnant. I was even asked"if i was sure there aren't twins in there?"

Is it possible that the doc may have missed something?

I've had a terrible pregnancy so far...every symptom you can think of... I've had it x10.

:( I feel you. I'm only a little over 14 weeks and I am big for my size. My uterus is already up to my belly button and I know that when I got my 8 week viability scan, there was only one. I only have gained 4 pounds and I weighed 164 before getting pregnant. I'm 5"6 too so it's not like I'm that short. I know that you were ttc...but is this your first? I've been told that subsequent pregnancies show earlier.
I also think that I just make big babies. My son was born at 35 weeks and he was almost 10 lbs then. Please don't think that you will have a big baby, this is just what I am thinking this to be.: flower:

I'm pregnant with twins and people keep commenting how small I am and can't believe I have only one in there (though I think the boys are quickly growing!) They could see my twins right away so I think after 4 scans they probably would have caught it.
I think everyone carries differently; I wouldn't worry. Maybe your little guy is just a really great grower!

If you've had that many scans I'm sure they would have seen a second baby at some point. I'm not saying it's impossible, but try not to worry about it, and if you are really worried let them know and they'll probably do another scan to be sure. Some ladies just show more and sooner than others. I'm nearly halfway through my second pregnancy and haven't got much of a belly at all. People always ask if I'm sure I'm pregnant! I also had a very small belly when I gave birth to my first 16 days late, everyone was telling me all the time how I was going to have such a tiny baby and he ended up nearly 9 pounds and 2 feet long... while my cousin who gave birth around the same time as me, was about 4 times the size of me, was always getting comments about how huge she was even early on, and her doctor told her not to be surprised if she needed a c section because she was going to have a huge baby, which ended up being just over 7 pounds. Sorry for getting carried away! My point is that everyone is different and size doesn't really mean much, as crazy as it seems. A lot of your bump, even if it doesn't feel like it, could just be bloat, or you may just have a big baby, or you're just carrying it all out front.

i dont know how they could miss it after four scans and i get the same comments aswell people always ask me if i got two in there but nope just one big baby lol x

Twins run in my family too and it's always been the big joke that I would have them (much love to all the ladies with twins, but it wouldn't be my cup of tea, I'm not even sure we'll have another after this first one, let alone at the same time!). I've looked massive as well since about 8 weeks. I think it's still mostly just bloating and the fact that whatever fat I did have around my belly has pushed up in a weird way that makes me look about 7 months. But when I had a scan at 11 weeks, they were definitely able to confirm without a doubt that there's only one. I imagine it would be hard to miss, especially as you're further along. You just might be one of those ladies who carries big. I think I'm going to be too.

It's definitely possible. Since the moment my hubby and I found out we were pregnant people have been asking me if I'm having twins and I'm not overweight, I'm only 11w now and I haven't gained any weight but my belly is starting to pop out a bit (even first thing in the morning when I suck in, so I know it's not just bloat). Anyways, I have had a feeling I'm carrying twins, my symptoms have been terrible, although finally improving now. I at least only feel sick when I eat or first thing in the morning now instead of all day. My u/s tech only did the u/s for 5mins or less and they didn't even listen for a heartbeat, she just quickly showed us the heart flutter on the screen. Even after she said there's one baby I still can't shake the feeling that they missed something. I'm sure I'm crazy and there's only one. I'm beyond excited for the one baby and I'm not disappointed about it, I just can't shake the feeling. I guess I'm just saying you're not alone :)

Anyways....here's a link to another forum with some people who had twins missed:

It's my understanding that your OH being a twin has nothing to do with your capability or chance of having twins. Twins are caused by either a random splitting of one egg (monozygotic twins, or identical twins) or from two eggs being fertilized by two sperm (dizygotic twins, or fraternal twins). Identical twins are random. Fraternal twins are caused by hyper ovulation of the woman (where you release more than one egg), so it wouldn't have anything to do with the man. It has to do with your particular body and the way it runs.

That being said, I think the man can have a "twin gene" that can be passed on to any daughter that you have, making her a "hyper ovulator" and more likely to have twins. But not you.

If you have twins on your side of the family, (i.e. your mom is a twin, or your grandma) it's definitely possible. Keep in mind though, many many women have TERRIBLE symptoms of pregnancy and only have one baby. If you've had multiple scans, I imagine there is only 1 peanut in there. It'd be hard to miss on multiple scans (although, of course, not impossible).
