I thought this might be interesting for any USA parents, in other countries I think we would call this type of pain relief paracetamol or calpol depending on the branding etc. We also dose by weight in New Zealand so was surprised that it wasn't a common practice elsewhere.

I call BS.

Lol. It has definitely helped relieve pain for my girls. Teething for one, absolutely helps with that. When Ella broke her leg and was sore in her cast it helped too.

I really dont see how people can get the dosage wrong though? I just assume everyone reads the bottle and checks.
Ours goes by age, but I tend to give a little less than it states on the bottle.

I dunno but paracetamol does nothing for any of my pains as an adult, I always felt it was kinda useless! I guess they must have done a trial of it versus a placebo and the results showed that they worked the same, not sure.

I've overdosed on paracetamol as an adult but that was my own stupidity, took 8 pills at once because of gallstones.

Interesting read, thanks :) I'll have to look further into it!

Silly you with taking 8 tablets!!! It could've really damaged your liver (which an infected gallbladder does already). I have gallstones now too and an infection (getting it out next week) and paracetamol wouldn't even touch the pain with a flare up. they've given me oxycodone and its only to slightly help for the trip to the hospital before they can administer morphine. But they do want me to regularly take panadol to help with the fever.

Tylenol never helps me either. Never has. We stopped giving Tylenol as soon as kiddo was big enough for ibuprofen (Advil). My doctor said it's better anyway, it works faster and lasts longer.

It was certainly a moment of stupid desperation, I had the stones for 8 years :dohh:. Most of them had passed from my gallbladder and were sitting in the bile duct, I had my bladder removed and then the roaming stones later removed too.

Paracetamol helps me alot. I dont take it often, only when I am really in pain and it has never not helped.

And yikes! At taking 8 tablets! You must have been in awful pain :(

The pain from the paracetamol almost rivalled the pain of the gallstones, I think I was vomiting up white froth for a good 48 hours.

Paracetamol did used to work well for me when I was younger, but I spent a lot of time on tramadol for the gallstone pain and also strong stuff for migraines, maybe I have adapted because of that?

Interesting. Tylenol has NEVER worked for me, I never even bother with it anymore. Ibuprofen is the only thing that ever helps me. I use it for my csection recoveries. Wouldn't even bother with Tylenol. I think with my experiences that's why I favor ibuprofen over Tylenol for pain relief for my kiddos.

People's responses are interesting. I only have ever used ibuprofen. I thought everyone swore by Tylenol.

I hate that the calpol and other meds are done as age in the uk. It should always be weight as they vary so much. Until recently my daughter was way below the weight of an average child her age. If I'd followed the age guidelines she would have been over dosing. Luckily my mums a nurse so I get her to tell me how much I should give based on their weight.

Paracetamol is the only thing that works for me but ibuprofen is the only thing that brings down my children's fevers.

Tylenol doesn't bring down my kiddo's fever either. He was really sick last Christmas and we ended up in emergency. The doctor there said not to give Advil (ibuprofen) but only Tylenol. We ended up back there a few hours later when his fever spiked and wouldn't go down and he was getting lethargic. So scary. The nurse said not to give Tylenol but to use Advil instead (this is the advice from our doctor too but the emergency doctor wouldn't agree when I told him)

Both the Advil and Tylenol was given by weight. Both bottles here in Canada have weight and age listed. I have the dosages per kg from the doctor for both as well so I can make sure they get the exact amount they need.

By weight certainly makes sense, I'm not sure why we don't do that with adults though. I'd probably need a lot, I'm a heifer!

I think if it was given by weight for adults it would have to be a liquid so it would be easier to personalize.

I'm not big, 134 lb, and it never works for me. When I was younger I was lighter. I'm sure the dose would be calculated for an adult average weight, but safe for the smallest "adult" weight too? The dose is a pretty big range for over the counter drugs, I think. Safe range is really big to make it safe for most people.

Tylenol never helped me much either, I always take ibuprofen and give my kids ibuprofen after they are old enough. The only thing I use Tylenol for is alternating with ibuprofen every two hours when the pain is bad.

Ibuprofen works better too for my kids. I have the chewing tablets and always go by weight. And since my weight is around 90lbs I just use these as well...they're yummy :haha:

I think ibuprofen is stronger but it can't be taken on an empty stomach.

Ibuprofen will generally work better for any inflammatory pains: teething, viral pains, etc.

Paracetamol/Tylenol main use is as an antipyretic. BUT, medical research shows its effective if take regularly. So for an adult you need to take it every 6 hours to build up a level in the blood steam for it to be truly analgesic. It is routinely given with morphine and other opiates to make them more effective. So it does help with pain but in regular doses.

I try to use regular paracetamol rather than brufen. Brufen has many more side effects than paracetomol and isn't nice on the stomach. But if my lot are in pain it's always Brufen first.
