can i just ask if any of you with the underactive have had this ......
i was took into hospital other day with high blood pressure and a few other bits .. was in for 5 days and while in there had numerous bloods done ...went up to see midwife other day and she said that they found "antibodies" attacking my thyroid ... what does this mean ?? .. my doc did my level checks lastweek and he said all was fine and when i told her that she said that is a different test he needs to do an antibody check .... could anyone shed some light on it for me please ?? .....

I am currently on 200 mg daily and was diagnosed around 4/5 years ago ...
:wacko::wacko:
thankyou :)

I have under active thyroid but not had any problems, when they check my thyroid it's always been ok so far so good.

What are they going to do to about it?

not sure she said i have to get back to the docs and get more bloods done but the antibodies one ... not got an appointment untill friday .... just never heard of the antibodies before ... and my levels are fine ... its confusing haha ... dont know what they are going to do if it comes back i have antibodies ?? i dont even know what it mean .... ...

hiya hun,

it's not that big a deal if you are being monitored and on thyroxine already - i have this too.

basically, they do two types of tests for thyroid - one is on the hormone level to see if you have enough thyroid hormone and one is on the thyroid function and why it is not working correctly. the antibody test relates to the function tests - the reason your thyroid is underactive is because of the antibodies causing damage to the thyroid gland.

i'm no doctor, and have only been diagnosed a year, but i think that's about right!!

if you are being monitored with regular bloods, and your dose is right, you'll be ok hun x

well thats what i thought thats why i told them i had been in the docs the week before and he was happy , but then the doc from the hospital said that dosnt matter he needs to do more checks and get it sorted .... but if its no effecting me as in i dont need a higher dose im not sure why they are so concered i could understand if my levels had come back not right then that would explain it .. oh god they dont half confuse me ... ive been on thyroxine for years now and had loads and loads of bloods done just never came across this before which is why i was asking on here to see if anyone else had it .....
thanx jeffsar :) xxx

i think it's because if the original reason you developed hypothyroidism wasn't due to antibodies, which it sounds like, then they may be worried it's getting worse? plus if antibody levels are high during pregnancy they worry about the thyroid development of baby. BUT, don't let that scare you. my specialist told me that the thyroid of baby is developed by 2nd tri, so if your levels are just off now, you and bubs should be fine.

ask the doctor to explain it though - i'd be interested to know too x

yeh i will hopfully find out more on friday :) ... i will update once i know a bit more :) ....thanx again xx
