I went to the pediatrician three days ago for my sons shots, and upon weighing him they said he is 13 lbs and he is underweight. He is 4 months old. I felt so terrible because the doctor said that my milk supply must be low! I felt like such a terrible mother. Does anybody else have a baby that's underweight? Help!

Did he drop weight percentiles? Is he eating non stop and coming off still hungry? Not hitting his milestones? Head circumference dropping percentiles?

My LO didn't weigh 13 lbs until after he was 6 months, but he was always tiny.
I did have a low milk supply that was diagnosed at 3 months. He was only 8lb 9oz at the time and was eating all the time and still hungry. He also had severe green diarrhea because there wasn't enough food in his digestive track. His length and HC were dropping percentiles because he wasn't getting enough to eat.

My dd was 8lb 11.5oz (85%)at birth but at 4 months she was only 13lb 3oz (below the 50%). Her height is still at the 90th % though and she's surpassed all her milestones so her doctor wasn't too concerned about her weight. Since then she's still tall and thin but that's normal for her. As long as your baby is gaining weight and has enough wet diapers I wouldn't be too worried.

My eldest was only about 12lb at that age and he was fine, is your doctor judging the 50th centile as the 'right' one; this isn't correct all the lines on the chart represent perfectly normal average weights...

My daughter is 4.5 months old and just a little over 11 pounds but she is very short so 11 pounds is not bad for her.

I just put your LOs weight into two growth charts; on the US one he is between the 5th and the 10th centile and the UK one between the 2nd and the 9th; these are perfectly healthy. If your baby started on one of the high centiles and has been falling down the chart ever since; then maybe there is a cause for concern but they should not be concluding low milk supply without looking at other causes first. Some babies have issues absorbing certain nutrients; including the fats and calories needed to gain well, usually this is a temporary problem but it can be diagnosed by a specialist.

On the newest growth charts from the UN adapted for Canada it's between the 3-15 percentile on the boy's chart (is 15-50% for girls).

How long is your son and how much did he weigh at birth?
