Ladies, I'm asking this question for a friend of mine. After 2 chemical pregnancies, her fertility specialist came back today and said all blood work and tests looked good. However she had high levels of Ureaplasma in her system. I was just hoping to provide my friend with a little more information about this. Can anyone shed any light on this and any success stories after treatment? Thanks!

Ureaplasma is a subtype of mycoplasma, and some older studies that were never followed up on did show that mycoplasmas are linked to higher miscarriage rates. I have had recurrent losses, but all the recurrent loss blood work came back as everything fine. After that, my perinatologist said he wanted my OB/Gyn to test for mycoplasmas. Mine also came back positive for ureaplasma.

Normally, they do not even test for mycoplasmas or treat for them, since most sexually active adults in the US carry it at this point. However, my perinatologist said there were some studies back in the 80's and 90's linking mycoplasmas to pregnancy loss. He has no idea why they were never followed up on since they did conclude that mycoplasmas (ureaplasma included) likely does cause pregnancy loss in some women!

Another thing I found out is that if a clinic does treat for mycoplasmas, they generally only treat the woman, and that's that. However, my perinatologist also said that when just the woman is treated, that the man can still carry it and pass it right back. On top of that, he said that the low dose antibiotics that clinics usually use don't always kill the mycoplasma in the uterus, only the vagina- so both partners can test clean, but the woman can still have it.

Long story short, my husband and I were both given a 5-day course of super hardcore antibiotics.

I don't know if getting rid of the ureaplasma will help me to conceive and carry to term yet, they only just found it and treated it last month, but I really, really hope it helps. So far, it is the ONLY thing they can find. They've even done aspirin and prednisone with IVF and I haven't carried a baby to term yet, so hopefully the mycoplasma was the problem. I'm going for a frozen transfer next month, so we will see!

Bless your heart. I'm so sorry for your losses and troubles. Thanks for the info. I'll make sure to pass it along! My friend and her husband are both getting the antibiotics. This has been the only thing they can find with her too. I hope you'll keep us posted on the results of this treatment. Good luck!!

I will! Please let me know how things work out for her! And please tell her I'm so, so sorry for her losses. I hope that the mycoplasma treatment is all she needs to finally have a healthy pregnancy. <3
