Hi all,

I got a BFP on Monday so went to the doctor today. She asked when my last period was, and I said that I wasn't sure. I told her that I'd had proper bleeding on 26th August but had started spotting on 20th August.

She then asked me what made me think that I was pregnant, so I said the positive pregnancy tests (duh! - not that I said that to her!). She asked me why I'd decided to test then, so I told her that I had symptoms (odd CM, moodiness, backache etc.). I forgot to tell her that I'd had v. sharp ovulation pains two weeks before I tested, and that I always get my period two weeks to the day after ovulation. But I did have my two children with me so clearly have experienced all this before.

She then told me that I hadn't missed a period yet and it was too early to know if I was pregnant or not. She said that she wouldn't test until a week after my period had been missed, and that as it was far too early for a pregnancy test, I had to go and have bloods taken to find out. The receptionist said that there's a two week waiting list for blood tests!

Is this just me, or was she slightly barking?! Has anyone else had a doctor acting as though you're stupid for telling them you're pregnant?

That doctor sounds awful!
Some drs think they know it all.....she probably doesnt even have children and you could teach her a thing or two!! Grrr....where would have been the harm in her doing a urine test! It only takes 3 mins!

CONGRATULATIONS xx

Ya I don't know why she wouldn't do a test. It takes 2 seconds. But I don't think I'd go to the doctor before I missed my period, and not because you can't be pregnant, but because you could have a chemical. And I don't want that to sound awful! I've had one before so it's just a precaution.

Woah, that's a bit over the top!

Due to my previous mc's I have been to the doctors 3 times on the day of my missed period and bfp. They booked me straight in with the midwife and didn't do a test to confirm.

Is there any way you can see another doctor at the surgery?

I think that my period had been due on Monday though, going by my ovulation pains. My cycle has been a bit haywire lately. Also, the test I did was a cheapy one, not a hyper sensitive, so I think that means that I must have been due that day. With my other two children, I did leave it longer before going in, but that was just because I was busy with work. This time I thought I'd get my priorities right, and it bit me on the bum!

Think I'll get the blood test done, but steer clear of the doctor! Luckily, at my surgery, once they've got you down as being pregnant, you then only see the midwives, and they're all really lovely.

Thanks all.

Ya, it's not just you. Your doctor sounds very silly and rude. Perhaps she's book smart with no common sense? I got a BFP 4 days before I expected my period. Everyone's cycle is different and a + is a +. I would have just been condescending back to her and explain that to her. I hate doctors who insist on talking down to their patients when their patients are obviously informed. I'd shop around if I were you til you find someone you're comfortable with. Trust your instincts.

My friend had the same,,she tested three days early and the doctor said he couldn't confirm the pregnancy til she'd re-tested once her period was due.

i had the same with a nurse i was confirmed with a digi four times that i was sadly i mc but she was like well maybe your period was just late as you have been ill in hospitail.... my reply was four digis dont lie! pfft nurses/doctors... mine was the same surgery that said my ear infection was my wisdom teeth... which resulted in me 7days in hosptail nearly having menatiosts (sp) ct scan mri scan and a op and it was like i said a very serious ear infection which could of led to my brain... yet the same stupid nurse said it was nothing!!! duh good job i listened to myself!

That's ridiculous! Get a new doctor immediately. I wouldn't want to go 9 months with that woman!

We are on the same cycle almost to the day I think. I tested positive at 9dpo and have taken at least 8 tests thus far. I had my first appt. today too. They didn't doubt me, but they had me take a urine test as standard procedure. I don't know why your doctor wouldn't do that. It doesn't make any sense. I would definitely find a new doctor!

Gosh that sounds ridiculous! Do you have the option to switch doctors? I can't imagine going to that person for the duration of my pregnancy.

Thats ridiculous. I can't believe how terrible some doctors are.

I went to a walk in clinic once and had to misfortune to see a dr who had misdiagnosed me and made me cry years earlier (I had a dry socket infection from wisdom teeth being removed...he gave me some T3's and basically told me I had no infection and to suck it up).
Anyway. Went to see him because I thought I might be pregnant. AF is very regular for me. Usually I can clock it to the day and its always the same in terms of cramping, flow, length etc.
Well this month AF was very different, basically just a bit of spotting. I was having some pregnancy symptoms but had a BFN so was looking for another test or a blood test.
He asked me why I thought I was pregnant and I explained my symptoms. He told me that since I'd gotten my period (totally discounting that it was not a normal period) and I was on the pill at the time it was "impossible" for me to be pregnant and sent me out of his office in tears because he was so rude to me.

Thanks all, sorry to hear others have had bad experiences too.

She isn't my usual doctor, so I shouldn't have to see her again. If she had just said that she wasn't able to confirm my pregnancy for another week because it was too close to the date when my period was due to start, then I'd have completely understood. It was the way that she quizzed me on why I possibly thought I could be pregnant and told me I couldn't know - I'm 37 with two children, not a 13 year old who thinks you get pregnant by kissing!

Congratulations to all,

Sounds like my GP! I got a very dark positive on FRER at 13dpo and went in to see the dr at 14dpo. Before the doctor saw me, I told the receptionist I wanted to do a urine test.

Anyways when the doc saw me she said it was IMPOSSIBLE that I was only 14dpo as the urine test gave a strong positive. She claimed a HPT won't detect pregnancy until a WEEK or TWO WEEKS after a missed period. Maybe that was the case 20 years ago, but come on! She insisted that I was wrong with my dates and that I was actually 6 weeks pregnant. I showed her my BBT chart and everything, she said nope, I must be farther along.

Anyways I convinced her to send me for multiple HCG tests. I had one done that day and it came back 177. 4 days later it was 1285. She saw these results and was dumbfounded and said "well....I guess you were right, but you shouldn't have gotten a positive so early."

I think some doctors are just have such an old school train of thought and don't keep up with current technology. Thankfully she referred me to by OBGYN.

Anyways, back to you...why is there a 2 week wait on blood tests? That doesn't make sense? I don't know how it works in other places, but it Canada we have multiple labs to choose from, just take a form and go wherever works for you. There are about 5 or 6 labs in my immediate area, and you are free to go to whichever you choose. The lab I use gets my results to me the same day.

I hope all works out for you. And hopefully you can find a doctor who knows what they are talking about!

Yeah im so sick of the way some doctors treat people - i have had my share of prick doctors that talked to me like dirt. I changed doctors with this pregnancy because i was so sick and tired of how sarcastic the doctor i had was with me.
