We lost our Perfectly Healthy Baby to a Rare pregnancy condition known as Vasa Previa. It effects 1 in 3000 woman, the need to scan for it and follow the appropriate management is so important yet still not always being done. My Hope through telling Millers story is that losing babies from Vasa Previa will be a thing of the past.
On tuesday the 8th of June at 35 weeks along my waters broke at home. i had been diagnosed with Vasa Praevia 2 weeks prior but was not admitted to hospital for observation. I was raced to the hospital, almost an hour and twenty minutes passed before my c section was performed my son was born at 2.04pm on the 08th of June 2010 he suffered severe blood loss resulting in failing kidneys, heart and majority of his other organs we were told that while this may repair itself his brain could not and he would have severe permanent brain damage and would never leave the Hospital. on the 10th of june at 1.30 am we turned off his life support and our son Miller Ramage Passed away at 1.40 am. My thoughts go out to all mothers and fathers who have experienced the loss of a child no words can explain this heartache and pain. Vasa previa is A condition in which blood vessels within the placenta and the umbilical cord are trapped between the baby and the opening to the birth canal, a situation that carries a high risk the baby may die from hemorrhage due to a blood vessel tearing at the time the fetal membranes rupture or during labor and delivery. If the membranes rupture at home the baby has about a 5% chance of survival. Vasa Praevia is a condition that is easily diagnosed but unfortunately in many cases still isnt being scanned for. My Hope by sharing Millers story is that all pregnant woman will be able to be the advocate for their baby by asking for a Colour Doppler scan to be performed to check for this condition and if confirmed follow the recommended management plan.
Please watch my youtube video dedicated to my son Miller to help raise awareness for this potentially fatal pregnancy condition.
