Hi, my DD is 16 weeks this wednesday and I don't know where to start. I gave her some porridge this morning then milk. But I don't know how much I should give her of milk or how much porridge etc. Or if I can give her the jars of food. Any advice would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

Hi hun, before 6 months your Lo should continue taking her regular milk feeds without dropping any as she needs the nutrients from them more than solids. Once she's 6+ months & fully weaned on 3 meals she needs 18-21 oz in addition to her solids but she can have more if she wants. At 9+ mnths she only needs around 20 oz with her solids, more formula can interfere with her solid intake at 9+ months.

Once she's 17 weeks (4 months) u can give her 4+ baby jars. Quantities depends on her. U can start by offering 1 solid, then introduce another one after 2-3 weeks. My advise, take it slow hun. Good luck xx

It's not recommended that you wean before 17 weeks at a minimum unless for medical reasons, and preferably much closer to 6 months.

That being said, milk is meant to be the primary source of nutrition for the first year, and early on in weaning, especially if you start before 6 months, you should be offering milk before you offer any solids. Their milk intake should remain steady until after 6 months, and they should drop how much on their own rather than you dropping it for them.

Before 6 months, it's recommended that you avoid anything with gluten, meat, dairy, eggs, etc. and stick to things like fruit and veg and gluten free products.

Hi angel i started aiden on porridge first or yogurt we just did that and usual feeds for the first few weeks i started just before 4 months as he was a guzzler lol :)
i give him 3/4 of his reg milk intake then do the feed, if still hungry offer bit more milk to wash down. Charts say just a few spoons but aiden LOVED IT and he had a whole bowl from the offset. xxxx

im about to start nicole on solids too, in 2 wks. hv told me i have to as nicole is taking anything from 50 - 60 oz of HBF in 24 hrs. not sure wether to do TW or BLW.

oh can i give nicole rice cakes/biscuits at 4mths.

icylou- hun you cant BLW until six months, some baby's arent ready then as part of the process is exploring the food rather than eating it. if you must wean before 6 months then stick to smooth purees of fruit veg and gluten free products

While I agree that 4 months is too early to start BLW, you can start it before 6 months. It's just recommended that you wait until as close to 6 months as possible.

Because it's baby led, if your baby can pick up food, bring it to their mouths, gum/bite some off and manipulate it in their mouths before swallowing it, then they're ready. Some babies show this readiness generally between 5-6 months, whereas others don't show interest until well after 6 months.
