so last night we decided to try some, he did good, he liked it, but is it too soon? everywhere I've looked it says in between 4 and 6 months to start rice cereal but I'm so confused, how often do I feed him it? I was going to ask his doctor but I forgot and now I don't see him till mid august

when did you start and how?

hey rome i first tried alice a few days before she was 5 months. she was draining her bottles and was drinking as much as she could without being sick so i decided to try her on baby rice she ate it but pulled some really funny face and i dont think she was that bothered. she then started teething and it all messed her up so iv only just started again now and shes 5 and a half months. she seems so much more interested now.
i just give her something at about 12/1 and let her eat as much as she wants. she wasnt really keen on the baby rice so i just started with basic vegtables. sweet potato she loves. shes also going to have carrot and butternut squash. and today she was chomping on a pear and loved that aswell.
start him off with just giving him something in the early afternoon, dont try new foods later in the day incase he has a reaction to it and i was also told to give the same food for a few days and then ry something different. i dont really have alot of advice because we have only just started so il be keeping an eye on this thread too :D xxx

russell was about 2 months when i started, he was drinking milk continuously so at his feed nearest to 5pm (so if he was hungry at 4pm... or 6pm...) he would have baby rice and a bottle. Eventually i added a fresh piece of fruit for desert and eventually changed his baby rice to other foods (jar, powdered or fresh). at about 4 months he was starting to drink milk continuously again so i added a breakfast solids which was fresh fruit, or a rusk in his bottle, powdered or something along those lines. He also eventually cut out a bottle at his tea time feed (he did this by himself) so i have a bottle of water ready incase he wants a drink. they say to avoid (when making fresh) meat, fish, eggs and citrus fruits (any fruit with a bit of a twang like orange and plums).

best thing to remember is to introduce foods one at a time and if they dont want it them dont force them

Laila is two months old tommorow and a couple of nights ago I gave her a tiny bit of baby rice, I mixed hardly any in with lots of formula, the only reason I did was, she drains all her bottles and is still hungry all the time so whenever she's like that I'll give her a tiny amount from now on, she seemed to like it but I suppose it's just like forumula) She's extremely greedy and went from 3oz to 5oz at 2-3 weeks old so milk just wasn't doing it for her that day. I was the same and had baby rice from 6 weeks old... same as my cousins xx

Babies are only really getting used to tastes of foods until the age of 1, thats when food is really important if you get me? Theo has food yes, but not loads, he still mainly has milk, hes thriving and happy

Hope it doesn't offend anyone, but I don't really agree with weaning before 4 months, their little stomachs aren't developed enough and you can make them poorly :nope: unless it is advised by a HV/Doctor...I personally would wait till LO is at least 5 months....up their bottles and frequency if you need to? If not I would speak to your HV first.

x

i agree with mel obviously its up to everone what they do though.
laura shes prob having a growth spurt there usually every 4 weeks which is why shes draining her bottles. you could up the amount you give her she will be back to normal in a week or so xxx

With DS 1, he was bottle fed. He stopped taking bottles during the day around 1 year, and stopped night bottles around 18 months.
He LOVED table food. He started eating table food around 4 months (jars and stuff)
I followed his cues. He was always interested in our foods and grabbing and he loved it!

DS2 was nursed exclusively fo r3 months, then I went back to work and pumped, and he had EBM and formula while I was at work.
He started solids around 7-8 months, I think?
He wasn't very interested in solid foods!
He weaned from me at 10 months, and weaned from the bottle around 18 months.

You shouldn't start any solid food until 6 months. It's bad for their poor little underdeveloped tummies. If you are breastfeeding you can wait even longer - all a baby really needs is milk until they are one!!!!

I haven't weaned my son yet...

Also there is nothing wrong with babies drinking bottles continuously. It doesn't mean they need solids, it just means they're going through a growth spurt. Sometimes my son would be breastfeeding literally all day. He gained weight just fine. :D

i think thats a little harsh tbh. just because you havnt weaned your son doesnt mean that what were doing is wrong.

i think i'll be starting quite soon, HV said she will come back and see me when he's 4 months and we'll talk about it then cos he will probably be ready, he's a greedy little thing :haha: xx so i'll put 4-5 months in the poll cos i doubt i'll give him anything before then x

mm agreed.. some could argue 2 years old is too late

Over 2 years old and he doesnt eat any solid food at all?

Guidelines here in the UK are 6 months, but i know in the US & Canada, it varies from state to state between 4 & 6 months

As a mum you know your baby best and if you feel you may need to wean (early) then the best advice is to discuss it with your HV/Health Practioner and go from there :)

maybe she means that she hasnt weaned him off milk yet but does have solids

^^ Maybe, but that then would be irrelevant to the discussion as its about weaning onto solids, not off of milk

Who knows?, i was just taken aback, ive never heard of a child weaned so late if we are talking in the solid food sense.

i cant imagine a 2 year old not having solids as he would (in my opinion) be grabbing at others foods and being curious. My HV advised me to try baby rice with russell as he had been drinking too much for too long and it didnt appear to be just a growth spurt iykwim

yea i was a bit like waaa? maybe she will come back and explain lol

LOL!!!!! OHhhhhhhhhhhh!!!

Silly me, when I think "weaned" I think milk and bottles! Oh dear, my fault.

Of course my son eats solids. I started him at six months. Misunderstanding right here.... my eyes were popping out at the idea of you ladies weaning your children off milk at 2-6 months.
