I thought the average weight gain for a bf baby is 4-7 oz a week! Am I wrong?

Hannah had a paeds app yesterday and she weighed 8lb 2oz! I was amazed and so proud of her weight gain after everything we have been through. She was born 7lb but dropped to 5lb 9oz in a week as she was on a ventilator and they weren't feeding her enough! At 10 weeks now she has finally got up to 8lb 2oz. She has been gaining constantly for 3 weeks now and she is has gained 18oz in weight over the last 3 weeks.

Yesterday the paediatrician told me that she should be gaining more and so won't discharge her. By my calculations the average weight gain for 3 weeks should be 12-21ozs and she has gained 18!!! Why is it NEVER enough ffs

Thats right hun, i found the docs and HV's always went by FF baby weight gain with Alfie i had to always remind them he's BF.

Have you plotted her on the BF charts above?? The charts the NHS use are from the 60/70s when FF was more popular and so weight gain was more rapid. The WHO charts take recent BFing trends in to account x

The nurse I saw yesterday that a BF baby should get back to birth weight by 2 weeks and then gain a few oz or more a week.

And does that apply to preemies like Logies with all her added complications?

paediatricians can be nobs, thats why! Finns told me that I shouldnt feed him every 2 hours, I needed to do it every3 hours -even though he was jaundiced and I thought more feeding was good? And you can see on his chart when he left hospital there was a massive weight gain when I ignored them and fed how I wanted. I know what my baba needs! You are doing great :hugs:

That is a good question. I will ask them about that as I am curious to know now.

Let us know what they say - I'm interested too as preemies do pop up pretty regular :D

My little boy was born at 8.3lbs but had a poor start due to latch problems, he was syringe fed with my hand expressed colostrum and donor breast milk for his first 3days so as a result dropped to 7.5lbs in the first week, it took him 3 weeks to get back to his birth weight! now he is putting on about 5 oz a week!!! :)

P.S. Logiebear, i would be over the moon with 18 ozs in 3 weeks, to me thats great progress!
