Probably a really dumb Q, but what is the purpose of this feature in threads?

Is it just to go to the last post in the thread, or can I do something else with it too??

That's about it - it enables you to jump to the first unread post, the last post in the thread, or the first post on a page or within the thread. Just a handy navigation tool for threads.
