what should I expect from an early assessment scan - and is it too early?

Hi girls

I just wanted to say thanks for the support you have all already shown me!! And Ive only just moved up from TTC in the last few days!!

Can anyone tell me what to expect from an early assessment scan? I have previously suffered an ectopic pregnancy - when I went to see my doctor this morning she referred me to the early assessment unti for a scan to make sure everything is in the right place and that there is a heartbeat.

It is for a week tomorrow as they said I would need to be 6 weeks 3 days so they could see what they needed too.
However, I think my cycles are a little irregular and this may make me a few days behind an average pregnancy - will they still be able to tell where everything is? I think I may be 2-3 days behind where they think I am (if that makes sense?)
So I may only be just about 6 weeks when I get my scan!! Is this too early!!

Help me!! :wacko:Lol! Im going out of my mind here!! How will I last a whole week until then??

Hey, everyones different but when I thought I was 6+2, they actually dated me 6+1 they saw the little bean and heartbeat so fingers crossed for you!x

It will soon be here, you will see how time has flown when you look back at it :happydance:

I was sent for an early scan for a similar reason to you, i told the nurse I wanted to wait because although my dates said i was 6 weeks 1 day, i knew i would only be about 5 weeks due to late ovulation and a little implantation bleed i had. So i went anyway, and lo and behold there was just a sac at 5 weeks! Somewhere between 5 and 6 weeks you can see the fetal pole so i'm sure you will see something even if you are earlier, you can even sometimes see the heartbeat at 6 weeks-ish!! :flower:

I've had two early scans now, one at what I thought was 5+3, and today at 7+1. On my first scan there was nothing other than the gestational sac and yolk sac. The letter to my GP said 'embryo absent' which made me cry. So I was really nervous thoday but there was no need - we got to see our baby's heart beat! It was like a grain of rice that was pulsating - AMAZING! I've heard you can't really see anything up until about 6 weeks, but everyone is different. My doctor had calculated me as 8w6d on my first scan according to my LMP, but I knew that was wrong (had a funny 'light' period after that which I've used to calculate my EDD), and today the adjusted me from 7w1d to just 7w so I wasn't far off. Don't be disheartened if you don't see anything at your scan - it's very normal, but they will probably ask you back in 1-2 wks to re-scan. GL!

I had a scan on Thursday which I put myself at 6+2. They saw a flickering heartbeat and put me back to about 5+5 ish.

I think scans are addictive - I'm trying to work out how soon I can convince hubby that we should get a private one. We originally said about 9 weeks, to break up the time between the early scan and the 12 week scan, but I don't think I can wait that long!

Oooh I think we are due on the same day! Where abouts in Surrey are you (if you don't mind me asking)? I'm just over the border in Kent.

I'm right over the other side of Surrey on the Berkshire/Hampshire borders! My parents did live in Biggin Hill for a few years which is on the Kent/Surrey borders but they've moved now.

So I've had a scan at approx 5w3d and 7w0d. DH surprised me about 1hr ago telling me he'd booked me in for a private scan at 9w4d! I had no idea, although we had looked at it I dind't think he would do it! Bargain at only £28, but you don't get any piccies (I'm sure you can if you pay extra). This is at a clinic in Hampshire though so quite far for you to travel :(. If we 'like' the experience we can use the £28 as a deposit for a double scan with 2D, 3D and 4D scans plus videos! I hope you convince your DH and find somewhere good chick!

Biggin Hill's not far from us. We're in Edenbridge, just the other side of Westerham.

£28 is a great price! The cheapest I've found is £85! I did think about sneaking in for a scan while I'm at work but the prices in London are about £150! Hubby would be cross if I went without him anyway. He wont take much persuading to go for a scan in a week or so - especially if it makes me worry less. I'm driving him mad!

Thanks girls - youve reassured me a bit - although its really hard to stop worrying.

I guess I'll go to the scan and see whats visible - if they think more is needed then I guess they will call me back. Hopefully though I will get to see what I need to have more confidence and stop panicking!!

Hiya Farmerswife. I had a scan at 4+5 and they just saw a sac.. was really worried, but went back again at 5+5 and saw the baby with a lil flickering HB!! So please don;t worry if all you see at first is a sac at the early scan.

Thank you so much for all these answers!! I feel very supported and know that I can get answers to pretty much anything on here that is bothering me!!

Its better than having a midwife by your side 24/7!! So glad I joined this forum!!

Thank you Padbrat!! Im a little behind you but its around the same time that we will both have had a scan! So your advice is so valuable to me!! Youve given me some faith here!! Thank you!

I had a scan at what I thought was 6 weeks and 4 days and they put me back to 5 weeks and 6 days. I saw my little bean (looked more like a tiny shrimp than a bean!!) and the first flicker of a heartbeat. VERY exciting!!! Good luck xx

Awwww Farmerwife I am so happy you feel a little happier! Feel free to ask anything you like hun I am having weekly scans as I am high risk apparently lol x

Thanks Pad!! Thats really nice of you! Weekly scans must be a reassurance for you if you are high risk! I bet its the highlight of your weeks? :)

Also - thank you Leeze! Its nice to know that others have seen what they needed on a scan this early.

Ive got over a week to wait though!! How will I get through this??!! ARHGH!!

Thought I was over the 2 week wait - now I have another one! lol
xxxxx

Ahhh Farmerswife... no they are def not the highlight of my week.... they scare me to bits and then I see my baby and the lil HB and feel wonderful... just praying it all continues

Aww Pad!! Im sure they will be the highlight of your week once you are past this first trimester. I bet as soon as the sonographer starts to smile - so do you?? Lol! I hope everything continues to unfold this way for you!!

Stay positive!! xxxxxxxxxxxxxxx

Thanks farmerswife.... as soon as I see that little flickering HB I grin from ear to ear.... next one is tomorrow....

OH My GOSH all of this is sooo confusing....

I too go for an early ultra-sound (confirmation of pregnancy is what my dr. calls it ) on 04/15 next friday!

at that time the dr. thnks i should be 7+3 according to my last period date.

I dont think so... one internet calulator says im 5+1 today and once says im 4+6 today... yet another calcualtor says im 6+1...so if the lowest one is right by the time my ultrasound gets here i will only 6+1.... ahhhhhhhhhhhhhh

NHS doesn't offer a scan until 12/13 weeks (unless there is a problem) but I've booked in a private scan at 10 weeks (haven't told DH yet :happydance::happydance:)

I am on weekly scans for the first 10 weeks Hels... I am a real problem child lol... apparently according to my MW I am a High Risk Mum.... Bleurghhh hate it when they say things like that...
