I have been tossing around the idea of Clomid my pcp is out of the country till April and I'm currently waiting on a callback....from the nurse practitioner.....do I just ask for it.

What tests do they do before prescribing ....I wanna make sure insurance covers everything

They do quite a bit before you get Clomid because they don't want to overstimulate your ovaries. If you've been TTC for a year, they'll start the testing, which you may have to be referred to a specialist to do. They test your insulin levels, hormone levels, you have an ultrasound (internal and external) to check for uterine abnormalities and PCOS. They also do an HSG, which is where they inject dye into your uterus to see if there is any blockages and clear them out.

Sometimes they'll even do a laparoscopy if there's a chance you may have endometriosis.

It's not a simple process, and not really a drug you can just ask for. There's quite a bit of monitoring while you're on Clomid as well, to check to see if it's working. It's meant for women who have trouble ovulating.

I should add that I'm not sure about insurance covering all these tests, I'm in Canada so everything is free (except for the Clomid which is pretty pricey). I can imagine though, if insurance doesn't cover the tests, that it can get pretty expensive after it's all said and done.

I'm going in at the end of the month for a Clomid consultation. My doctor hasn't told me everything that will go into getting on the medicine but I have been TTC since Oct. and have failed to ovulate or get AF on my own since June. It only took one month for her to decide she wanted to do clomid after knowing I'm not ovulating after blood work confirmed. I don't know exactly what the cost will be but I'm sure my insurance will cover most of it just like any other medication

I've done clomid twice before without any specific testing or monitoring and it did not work. I'm now on my first monitored round with a trigger shot and an IUI. The specialist (reproductive endocrinologist) did a baseline ultrasound, and a huge amount of lab work including basic labs, insulin, FSH, LH, AMH, prolactin, thyroid function, liver function and had my DH get a semen analysis. I also had the HSG but it was actually after taking my clomid on days 3-7. There is a lot that goes into a round of clomid, most docs want to know where you and your partner stand in regards to labs etc. You can do clomid without all that, my OB gave it to me and told me to "run with it" but it didn't work. Turns out that my DH has some male factor infertility we didn't know about so it wasn't likely to work without an IUI, so I took drugs for no reason.

I hope this helps!
