Hey,
I have been TTC for well over a year now with no luck. I started using ovulation tests 2 cycles ago.
First cycle i used them when i thought i would ovulate but no ovulation showed on the tests....
Second cycle i used them from day one of my cycle...all the way through to see if i was just calculating wrong...still no ovualtion showed.
What do i do??
I went to my doctors in dec (when i had been TTC for 1 yr and 3 months) and he said there is nothing they can do until it has been 2 years. Do u go back, even though it hasnt been two years, but i have been doing these tests and got nothing or will they just say i have to wait!!?
xx

OPKs don't work for everyone, some people never get a positive but still ovulate.

If I were you I'd chart your temps, that will give you a much better idea if you're ovulating... Then if you're not I'd go back to the docs and they should do something. If you go and say about OPKs they probably won't care, because docs hate OPKs!!

Have a look at my chart (on my ticker) and you can see when I ovulated because of the shift in temperature..

Many women have different LH Concentration in their urine, some have lower concentration despite their peaks (Asian women in general for example), while other women experience high LH concentration levels.
You should probably get a OPK with higher sensitivity that can measure LH concentration starting at 10 mIU/ml. Some tests can only measure above certain concentrations starting at 40-50mIU/ml.
Ask your pharmacists for recommendations, or look for ultra-sensitive tests. Test 2 times a day just to be sure you don't miss it.
That's what my pharmacist told me when I tested over 2 weeks without a positive. She gave me another pack of ultra-sensitive tests and another pack of Clearblue Digital Ovulation tests and told me to test on both. Got positive on the ultra-sensitve first and then a smiley on my clearblue on Day 21.
Other factors for missing O could be hormone imbalances or diminishing egg supply due to age. Best do a blood fertility test with your doctor to find out why and this video might shed some light:

Don't give up!!!

First of all don't panic as this happened to me :hugs:. What I did and it worked well for me is this.....

Test twice a day NOT first thing in the morning, you don't produce LH until after you wake up and DON'T test too late in the day either. I tested at 10:15am (at break time, I'm a teacher) and 4:30-5:30pm (basically when I got home from work). I then got positives every month and it took 4 months to conceive (we'd been npnt for years). Your levels can rise and fall very quickly (like mine) and you are likely to miss it (like I did). Also don't bother testing till period is finished it's very expensive otherwise. I used cheepie ebay ones and they worked fine but splashed out on cheepie ebay midstreams to do at work so I didn't have to pee in a pot iykwim  that way it keeps costs down.

If and only if this doesn't work after a few cycles go and see your doctor then they can do bloods to check if you are ovulating. Good luck hon pm me if you need any help. xxx

I amu using ultra sensitive ones already, from eBay, and I test when I get home from work...about 6pm.
It's rly fraustrating! I tried doing temps and couldn't gr the hang of it at all, my temps where absolutely everywhere! Couldn't work anything out!
I will try again this month, is it to late to start now? I am day 8.

Nope that's fine start now, if you click on my ticker it'll take you to FF and you can get a free trial with them (if you don't already have)

Try and make sure you take your temp as soon as you wake up, and if you can, at approx the same time each day. I set my alarm for 15 mins before I need to get up, immediately stick the thermometer in then sleepily add the result to FF and then go back to sleep!

You'll need a 2dp BBT thermometer, cheap on Amazon if you don't already have one x x

Ok will start from tomorrow. I have just made account and alredy have a thermometer. Can someone explain to me simply how to tell when u r ovulating using charting?!

Sure... So you record your temps every day, as well as your CM and (obviously if you get any) OPK results. There's lots of other boxes to tick if you want to add any other symptoms.

FF will add in your ovulation date for you, but it has to have seen 3 temp rises in a row before it will do so. So you won't know until a few days after.
Some people get a dip in temp (like on my chart) before the rise, so if you see a dip one day, then a rise the following day, that could well be it. FF will count your dip day as ovulation. Some people don't get that though and just get a rise.

Your temps should stay elevated throughout your Luteal Phase, then drop when AF arrives or is about to arrive. It's normal to get some ups and downs after ovulation - some people get an implantation dip if they're lucky then get their BFP... (but not everyone gets an implantation dip and similarly a dip doesn't necessarily mean it's implantation)

I would advise :sex: every other day, to make sure you don't miss your ovulation.

Hope that makes sense?

This just popped up on my FF so thought I'd post:

Q&A Index > Ovulation with no positive OPK

Can I ovulate without ever seeing a positive OPK (Ovulation Prediction Kit) result?

Yes, it is possible to ovulate without ever seeing a positive OPK (or peak reading on your fertility monitor). OPKs are designed to detect the surge of luteinizing hormone in your urine. This is the last hormone to peak before ovulation and the hormone that is responsible for triggering the rupture of the ovarian sac. LH needs to surge in order for ovulation to occur, but in some cases, the pattern of your surge and the time you test (if you do not manage to capture the surge when you test) will not let you see a positive result. If you have a sharp LH surge, for example, you may take one test before your surge is detectable by your kit and another test when your LH has already begun to trail and is no longer detectable by the kit. Whether or not you see a positive OPK result, it is recommended to keep on having intercourse until ovulation is confirmed by a clear and sustained thermal shift and ovulation is detected on your chart.

Personally I would go back to your Docs now and at least get them to do blood tests to make sure you are ovulating, a year is a long time without any issues.

Their tests will be far more accurate than anything that you try yourself.

Good luck

I agree with this. I think it's strange that they want you to try for at least two years before they will do anything; most doctors say that one year is enough to start running tests. Good luck!

That apparently is the general rule for the uk, especially in under 30 yr olds??!!!
So u can only work out afterwards if u have ovulated??

I have heard of somebody being asked to try for two years but only because her partner worked away 4 nights per week so there was a high chance that they were just missing her fertile period.

Is there another Doc that you could see within your practice?

It just doesn't seem right that your Doc isn't prepared to give you a blood test to find out if you are ovulating. It is a simple blood test you are asking for not a referal to a specilist. Clearly if the blood test indicates that you aren't ovulating then you have a strong argument to get a referal to a specailist.

I previously saw a doctor from a different practice, before I had moved house abs they said the same thing!!
I contact my local pct aswel and they said two years for a referral to specialist. If I do my temping this month and nothing shows then I will go in and see my doc and say I'm not ovulating try an get him to do a blood test!
Thanks for your help :)

Hi HjH, when you said you didn't get a positive OPK, do you mean you don't see a second line at all, or is it really faint, or is it not as dark as control?
I have had trouble with OPKs last 2 months. Both times, I had a fade in pattern where the test line went from "no line" to "faint line" to dark but not as dark as control. Also, had the darkish line for 3 days. from my Ov pains, i think I ovulated the first day of dark line since I got AF exactly 14 days later.

So maybe like the others mentioned, your missed the surge, or you have lower levels in general? Keep BDing around CD 10 - 17 and look out for other signs like EWCM. Don't worry about it, I was so bummed when I didn't get OPKs, but I am quite sure I did ovulate.

There was extremely light light on all of them. They were ultra sensitive tests and I tried at did times of the day, eseically near where I thought the time was, due to CM...but obviously not.. :(

I caught my surge by testing twice a day. I was geting close to positive for 2 days - then the afternoon around 2pm of the third day the same - close to positive. Took another test in the eve - round 10 pm and got a very dark - no doubt positive line.
