I'm laying in a hospital bed thinking things over. Hubby has left his smart phone with me so I thought I'd see what you lovely ladies have to say on the matter. This morning the antheatist nurse told me I should be able to nurse my baby 48 hours after surgery, later the actual aneathtist (so can't figure o2 how to spell that word) told me I should be giving up breastfeeding now as my lo is 6 months and the quality of my milk wil just be rubbish now (WHAT?!) And then when I got out of surgery a nurse went and spoke to a midwife for me who said that they regularly give all the same drugs to csec women and I could bf immediatley if I want.

I expressed enough to last a day but Jessa isn't doing great with the bottles so i'm very anxious to get back to nursing her. What would you do? Who do I listen to? And what's all this about my milk quality being rubbish after 6 months? I thought it was best to nurse for a year so we never had to move to formula?

stupid gallbladder. I'd never been apart fromm her for more than an hour before today so i'm having a really hard time already. I'm worried she's at home sobbing with her daddy. He's a great daddy, but she hit her separation anxiety phase about aweek and only wants me. Not to mention we always nurse to sleep. (i also got tuttuted by a nurse earlier today about that.)

They haven't been all bad here though, they've bent over backwards to make sure I have a single room so I can 'pump and dump' allday, and most importantly, have daddy and baby in whenever I want which is great because there's only one hour of visiting a day normally.

Advice appreciated!

And can I just add.......OH MY GOSH! OWWWWW! So sore right now. I fell asleep once so far and then I accident dropped my arm onto my abdomen.........not fair! Can't wait for all this to be behind me.

I think instead of listening to a nurse or aneathtist (sp) who DONT know diddle about breastfeeding- get a Lactation Consultant. Call your local La Leche League leader. They both can tell you your milk CHANGES for the better not to rubbish. Your milk is constantly changing to meet the needs of your baby, no matter how old they are. This is an old wives tale that at some point your milk turns bad- its NOT true. Also, again call a LLL leader or LC, heck even a pharmacist can tell you what meds are Ok with breastfeeding!

LLL in Scotland: https://www.laleche.org.uk/ and it is FREE to call and go to meetings!

Tried to answer this 3 times and my computer crashed  I agree with the previous poster. In terms of the advice given, tbh I would be going with the advice of the midwife but to make sure you have peace of mind I'd give LLL a call and ask them for advice. The anaesthetists comments aren't evidence based, helpful or up to date in any way. :(

Thanks guys, I'll give lll a call in the morning. So glad to hear the milk rubbish talk was just that! I confidently told him and the doctor next to him that the most recent advice was saying 1 year was best, they both shook their heads and agreed with each other that it must be 6 months. I'm glad I stood my ground and said "no, I'm sure it's one year."

It's actually 2 years that is the minimum recommendation according to WHO guidelines. The longer you breastfeed, the better the benefits on both you and your LO. Anyone who says otherwise is quite ignorant. It's a shame medical professionals are so poorly trained when it comes to breastfeeding. Good for you for standing your ground. :hugs::hugs:

I had a general anesthetic with my C-section and was expressing milk for Abby in NNICU within 12 hours. Clearly there is no problem with it!

I cant believe a health professional told you breast-milk is poor quality after 6 months! I would go with what the midwife said. Good luck and hope you feel better soon xxx

You milk is, and will continue to be, awesome. I'd listen to the midwife or ask a neonatologist/paediatrician. All the hospital has to do really is call SCBU/NICU, the midwives or the pharmacy anyway. Not all medical professionals are poorly trained re: bf'ing. :winkwink:

Thanks again guys! We decided we'd just use the 24 hours worth of frozen EBM we had and then go straight back to nursing. :) I pumped a few times during the night and by the time my hubby brought the baby back at 11am the next day we were ready to nurse again. :) No adverse effects at all. Crazy anaesthetist. I'm so glad they decided to check with the midwives and I had you guys. They were wanting me to wait 48 hours.. that would have been a heck of a lot of pumping!!

Glad to hear it went well and that boobies are back to business as usual!
