Just curious what everyones experiences are so far on the various transportation systems where they live. I've heard some good and bad stories so far and I'm interested to hear from you guys. Also say what area you're in.

Generally, are people nicer to you and offer you their seats? Has anyone been downright rude? Or have you just not noticed any difference? Any stories to tell?

We have no public transportation to speak of in my area! But I am lovely to myself in the car!

At work (I'm a teacher) people have been extremely kind, offering to carry stuff for me, or move so I can sit down if there is limited space.

I live jut outside London so use the london underground frequently, and when I got my nhs exemption card (meaning we get free prescriptions and dental care) I took this to the underground station and they gave me a 'baby on board' badge which I wear on my work jacket. It takes away the uncertainty people have if they dot want to offer you a seat invade you might not be pregnant and get offended. It also helps as you any see my bump under my winter coat.
I'm 20 weeks now and have been offered a seat on every train/tube journey I've taken since getting my badge. :0)

I too am from London and just got my 'baby on board' badge. Going to start wearing it this week in the hope that I won't get pushed around on public transport as much. But I really don't hold much hope, will be interesting to see what happens!

I live in London so travel on the tubes everyday.

No one can tell I'm pregnant so I havnt been offered a seat, but women who are clearly pregnant do not seem to get any trouble getting a seat. I think people are quite good about that here. Although sometimes with the eldery its different :-( but then I think sometimes its difficult to know when someone is old enough that they won't be offended. I've seen quite a few eldery looking ppl get offended when offered a seat lol

Argh, just re-read my post, bloody iPhone! Apologies for the horrendous spellings!!

No one gives up their sit, where I am, unless you ask with a bullying kind of attitude. I suffer from extremely low blood pressure and I have to sit after 10 min of standing up without moving around or I faint, I don't expect it out of courtesy.
I try to take the metro in non rush hours, and I walk as much as I can. If it is impossible to do either I will take a cab.

I drive to work mostly but there is a 10 mins walk which is past a music and drama school and the student that come out are more than happy to let me walk in the road!

London underground is a bit of a mixed bag, I have the baby on board badge which is a great help, otherwise people won't offer your seat in case they offend you (fat, not pregnant!). The main issue is that people don't make eye contact so I often end up standing up as commuters are just in their dream world not looking at other commuters etc. I usually find the people that offer their seats are the tourists! The commuters aren't overly pregnant lady friendly if i'm honest. If I've been sat down all day I don't really mind standing, but when the tube gets packed with people I get squished and elbowed (happened this week, kept having to tell a woman to stop elbowing my belly, think she did it on purpose in the end!) or people will make a flying leap to get on the tube just as the doors are closing so they can fly into you and bump. Personally, if someone offers you a seat, take it just avoid that sort of thing happening. Only 5 more weeks of the London underground to tolerate......and counting!

It's not generally an issue here - I live right on the start of a very quiet bus route so there are always seats available when I get on, and I'm normally only on the bus when I'm going to town which is the end of the route so same situation in the other direction... the bus route's quiet as it's a small company that don't run the newest shiniest buses, so most people get the bigger company's buses that run a very similar route - but that one doesn't go up the killer hill to our street.

Only issue I've had recently was some bonkers woman screeching at me to get out of the bus queue since she had a pushchair in the queue already (it varies if there are 1,2 or 3 buggy spaces depending on the bus running the route) - I was going to wait for the next one if the buggy spaces were full. She was just insane though - she got on the bus and started screaming at a woman already on there to get off so she could get her pushchair on instead.

I drive to work and walk into town but I recently took a short flight (my in-laws drive me to the airport because they wouldn't let me carry my suitcase on and off the train!) I also have a LU baby on board badge which I wore at the airport to make it more obvious that I am pregnant as my tummy could pass for being fat! I was appalled at how many people pushed passed me, bumped into me and pushed me out o their way just to get to the same place! One man nearly pushed me down the esculater just to get in front of me at the top then when we got to the bottom we all had to wait 10 mins for our bags anyway! One lady helped me get my hand luggage from the racks because I couldn't reach as I'm short and no one else gave me any help including lifting my bag from the conveyer. I don't plan to fly again in my pregnancy but I will shortly after LO is born as my family live a flight away but I'm not looking forwards to it. I've still got the return flight to go yet! :-(

Unfortunately due to my work I have to fly every 3 weeks or so. Peolple ar e not very nice at airports :(

One man nearly pushed me down the esculater just to get in front of me at the top

Happened to me at the Charles De Gaulle airport in Paris a few weeks ago. A man (non French, Asian) pushed me at the escalator and I almost fell, although I was standing in the right place not obstructing anyone. He had a huuuuge piece of luggage that hit me bad on my legs. Finally this man lost his own balance and his luggage was left on the top of the escalator, served him right.

Nice to hear there are budges in UK, I will keep that in mind :)

i use the buses at least once every 2 weeks or whenever i have to goto the hospital. I hate it if its a busy time as nobody is kind enough to give you their seat. I usually have my son with me in his pushchair if its going to be a long day.. and young people will sit where they are supposed to go and dont budge unless you tell them to so you can get the pram in the space. The worst bus for me is the one to the hospital from the town centre... normally my appointments are early in the morning.. meaning the bus is packed with college kids... and not one of them will move their ass! One time we went to get the bus, it was 15 mins before my scan time (bus takes only 5/10 mins to get to the hospital depending on the traffic) we were first in the line... when the bus pulled up it was pretty busy and we wouldnt have been able to get the pram on so had to take my son out and fold it up.... as we did that all the college kids pushed past us and filled up the bus!!! and the driver didnt say a damn word... we had to run and find a bloody taxi to take us.

I'm hoping to be able to drive most places when bubba gets here but parking in Edinburgh is a nightmare, so I'll be using buses a fair bit. They are usually jam packed with buggies as soon as you get on, or there are people sitting where it clearly states is a space for parents with buggies or a wheelchair. So I'm practicing my "oi, move" face LOL!! Either that or I'll just take little 'un in a sling :)

I get the bus as hubby takes the car to work, although for hospital appts he takes me, but midwife and shopping in town its the bus, an example is on friday, i was waiting for the bus for 40mins as it only comes once an hour, i was the second person waiting and had about 6 bags of shopping, when the bus pulled up, all the oldies who had only just turned up rushed to it, and me who had been waiting 40 mins was at the back of the queue! Yes i did get a seat once i got on, but people are just rude! Particularly the oldies!

Public transport is pretty much non-existent here. We have buses, but they do not come near my home, so I would have to drive to a bus stop, which is kind of counter-productive, might as well just drive!

It would be nice if we had a metro or something, but we don't.

I'm in Toronto and the subways/streetcar/buses are all a nightmare. Not only is the subway always overcrowded but there a frequent delays. No one gives up their seat for pregnant women and if they do you can bet someone close by will swoop in and take it. The Canadians who have a reputation for being polite or apologetic are certainly not on Toronto's transit system, at least in my experience.

I live in toronto so I take the ttc nearly everyday everybody is damn rude for the most part and service is awful so half the time I end up standing on a crowded bus or subway

Magic, you can obviously relate then. Morning and evening rush hour is the worst! People stand in the doors, don't take their backpacks off and some guy full on shoved me instead of asking me to move out of the way. It really stresses me out how more and more people just keep packing themselves in each morning. Oh and the transfer at Bloor station is just plain terrifying!
