When did you buy big nursery items (crib, changing table, etc)

I know it's still pretty early in the pregnancy, but when did you ladies start purchasing the major items?? Do you wait until after baby shower to purchase these in case parents, in-laws, etc want to buy them for you? But I was sitting thinking about it today and if that's the case and we wait to buy furniture, what if I go into labor before the baby shower?? This is probably a common sense type question but this first-timer is freaking out!! Any advice??

Also, do you ladies usually research all items before buying anything? Like travel systems and things? I don't know where to start!!

If you're having a baby shower, I would definitely wait, especially if you are going to have a registry. You can put everything you want on the registry and treat it as a master shopping list for yourself; whatever other people don't buy for you, you can go through and buy yourself later. And if people know it's your master shopping list, they don't feel pressured to buy big items if they don't want to, as long as there are plenty of small things on there.

I'm expecting a lot of hand-me downs, as I have a ton of friends and acquaintances with babies/ kids, so I'm not buying much until about 6 months; whatever I don't have by then I'll go looking for. A friend gave me a crib at like 6 weeks! Since then I've been given clothes, car seats, etc.

The exception would be if there's a super good deal and it's exactly what I want. I've been buying up cloth diapers on Ebay when I run across good deals.

We don't do baby showers really in the UK so I'm buying my stuff myself. I went against all my own values and beliefs and bought my cot at 17/18 weeks as it was SUCH a good deal in the baby event that I couldn't let it go. I'm buying other stuff in dribs and drabs. I'm hoping to come across a cheap set of drawers to use as a changing station and nursery storage either second hand or in a good sale... Eeek!

We put in our order for the crib and changing table / dresser as soon as we found out. I have a nice number of necessities on my registries like high chairs, walkers, strollers, and car seat and then a bunch of lesser expensive items. Our family isn't very big so we couldn't chance waiting on the bare necessities. Our best friends parents got us the car seat and stroller, the rest of the items I have on my registries that we really need are much more affordable if no one gets them for us.

Also, that is exactly why I asked to have my shower at 7 months instead of right on top of my due date. That way if there are things on my registry that we really need, that no one got us, we have time to get them before baby arrives.

Well I bought my pram at 6 weeks!! Can you believe that?! I found an excellent deal on a preloved icandy so I couldn't resist!! Ha ha.

We are in limbo now though as we don't know if we are moving house or not so for months we won't be able to sort out a nursery or buy a crib.

we ordered cot , changing table, moses basket through mother care, at 20 weeks straight after the scan, however i got right into it at 24 weeks and im all done now, but im not having a baby shower

In the US since we do baby showers we did our registry at 20 weeks, my parents bought the furniture then as it takes 12 to 17 weeks to be made!

I am panicking today because not only have we NOT picked out a crib or bassinet, we have NOT even cleaned out what will be the baby's room!! I actually had a fit towards DH today because the room is mostly his mess and it seems to get worse and worse!!

Ours is still our spare bedroom with all the associated furniture, bed, wardrobe etc. It probably will be for at least another 10 weeks! The stuff we've bought are still in the boxes they came in waiting to be built. They're not needed yet x

crib were not buying unless its on sale until baby is 3 months old, well be using a bassinet before that

Stroller and everything else we will be buying after around 7 months pregnant as I really don't want to store them forever and have them get dusty , especially since we will be buying everything secind hand

we're planning on having the room ready by the time I'm 30ish weeks...

I'd leave it for later, but in August everything is on sale here, so it would be a shame to miss out on getting the baby's furniture at a discount! That means we're going to have to start painting, putting up decals and installing an A/C in the room in July so the furniture will just get into place and the room will be complete.

I can't wait :happydance: that room has been white and empty far too long!

I feel you, I freaked on my husband b/c he keeps saying, "Next weekend" Yeah, NO more. We are going to work on cleaning out the closet tomorrow! lol I started selling all the furniture already though, last of the big items being picked up next Sat!

Same here, the babies room was a spare room and has a lot of "spare" items! Needless to say I am having a garage sale this month!

EDITED: Not sure why but it highlighted this: I feel you, I freaked on my husband b/c he keeps saying, "Next weekend" Yeah, NO more. We are going to work on cleaning out the closet tomorrow! lol I started selling all the furniture already though, last of the big items being picked up next Sat!

I am due Oct 24th. MIL is coming up at some point in Sept and buying the crib and helping us rearrange the bedroom and set up for Zoe. I have a registry set up on Amazon but not sure if I am going to have a shower or not. My mother is opposed to buying anything until after the baby arrives and my sisters are college students and both way too broke and I feel weird throwing one for myself.

So far no one has the link to my registry and I am just using it as my shopping list so I have multiples of several items until I make up my mind. I research every single item and try them out if I can.

So far the biggest issue I am struggling with is the stroller. There are 4 that I am considering and I wish I could try them each out for a few days and see how I really like them. I've even looked into stroller rentals just to try them out but I havent found any place where I can pick the exact stroller/model I want to try out.

I tested a couple of them at the baby show. They had a test track that simulated real life experiences including steps, narrow sidewalks, pedestrians, gravel, grass, cobblestones, pot holes etc. I just wish I spent more time test driving them.

I looked for stores with a test stroller track in NYC and only found one place and their track isn't that great. Also, they don't have 3 of the 4 strollers I like. :(

There are some fantastic review sites out there. I like babygearlab.com but they are a newer site without too many reviews yet. They really helped me pick out some bottles to try.

There are a few others I visit to help me decide what I want to try and of course suggestions from friends and amazon.com reviews for certain products.

26-30 weeks. We still have to set up swing!

I bought furniture first.. 3 months.. now just waiting for decor an bedding to arrive wich takes 6 weeks..special ordered... I like to take care an get everything done not wait till last minute... :)

We're using our daughters old crib for baby this time around, now she's big enough for a bed. We've decided not to buy any major items until after our 20 week anomaly scan though!

We haven't bought any big stuff yet! I guess I just thought I'd wait until after 20weeks (2days away) then go crazy!! DH has started on the nursery though, pink feature wall and shelving went up today!! Look so cute :happydance:

We bought a lit after the 20 week scan but not buying things for the nursery until about 34-35 weeks as we might be moving. (Keep fingers tightly crossed house sells!)

well im only buying what we need so minimal minimal for me. Ive brought the crib as i wanted a co sleeper and got one of ebay and i have ordered a pushchair as i saw a second hand one that was 1 year old and a bargain . Il get the carrycot nearer the time xx
