ive been bfing for 4 days and everytime she latches on, omg! it feels like someone is ripping my nipple off

please tell me it gets better soon :(

x

It shouldnt be hurting. Is her latch right? Have you seen a lactation consultant or been to a LLL meeting? Both can watch you latch and get that right and then see if theres another issue going on. How are you nursing her? Could it be the position?

HI DARLING JUST WANT TO SAY CONGRATS ON THE NEW BABY:hugs:
NOW ABOUT THE BFEEDING, IT SHOULDN'T HURT IF THE LATCH IS GOOD MAKE SURE HER LIPS ARE FISH LIPS BECAUSE IF THEY ARE SUCKED IN UNDER THE NIPPLE INSTEAD OF OVER IT , IT CAN CAUSE PAIN! HOPE IT HELPS DON'T GET DISCOURAGED IT TOOK ME 3 GOOD WEEKS TO GET THE HANG OF IT AND NOW MY LITTLE TURKEY WON'T EVEN TAKE A BOTTLE!

BF'ing shouldn't hurt at all...if it does there is something wrong with the latch probably. Can you call a lactation consultant?

its not her latch, ive already had that seen to, it doesnt hurt all the way through, just the first like half a minute, but it reeeeally hurts, mw said its ok and will get better, just hoping itll get better sooner rather than later :( x

Okay...seriously I don't get where women are saying it shouldn't hurt if the latch is right. It DOES hurt for some women even if the latch is perfect. I've seen it over and over in this section and even myself. I had my latch checked and it was perfect. But my nipples still hurt so bad and ended up cracked and bleeding. It's completely normal and it will get better. Just stick with it hun. Mine suddenly stopped hurting around 6 weeks. I know that seems like a long time from now but it is SO easy now. :hugs::hugs:

My daughters latch was perfect and it hurt like hell the first minute she nursed everytime for the first two weeks. During the third and fourth week the pain was a lot less. After the first four weeks were over it never hurt again. I met with a lot of nurses the first few days to check latch. It was always perfect. The most comforting nurse told me she nursed all 5 of her kids and it hurt badly for the first couple weeks until her nipples toughened up with each one. It's just not true for everyone that it doesn't hurt at first. Don't get discouraged, it does go away and it doesn't come back!

I had this at the beginning. I think it's just where your nipples are toughening up, so when she does the quick sucks at the beginning it's sore and then no longer sore when she starts doing the deeper sucking. It will stop, I think mine was better by 2 weeks but can't quite remember. Keep using lansinoh and remembering that it was stop soon.

I agree with those who said it does hurt no matter how the latch is. Your nipples just need to toughen up a bit and it should be a lot better by 2-3 weeks or so :hugs:

Mine hurts alot less now and lo is a week and a half. It's just started to get better and my nipples are healing. Mine were the same the first time around too so I thought it wouldn't happen this time around. I have been using so much lansinoh too and putting milk on them and drying them out.

Congrats on baby and on doing BF, did hurt for me too, and my MW said if you see his lips looking like the K in special K then he is on right, I found that putting lanolin or lanisoh cream on after feeds helped. It still twinges a little at the first suck as he has a strong suck, but it does wear off, sometimes when they suck for comfort it hurts a lot. Should get better, well done again hun.
:hugs::hugs::thumbup:

It hurt for me for about 2 weeks and that cream does help a lot. You'll get through it very soon :flower:

In case you don't know (I didn't!) you can detach by putting a little finger in their mouth whilst they are sucking - its much less painful if you need to re-latch.

thanks everyone, so i hopefully only have another week of soreness then lol...

I agree with those who said it does hurt no matter how the latch is.

This isn't the case for everyone though. My nipples didn't hurt at all, no cracks or bleeding or anything.

I agree with this completely. I had cracked bleeding nipples and would be in agony - especially for the first few minutes of bf. It didn't help that LO was feeding every 2-2.5h at first so they didn't get a break at all. For me, lansinoh was a godsend - that combined with bf on one side at a time for a while helped me. But it was painful!! I would say it started getting much better at 4 weeks and was nearly pain-free at 6 weeks. Also his latch was good - I think my nipples just had to get used to it. And once they got cracked and started bleeding they were slow to heal - but we have been bf now for almost 10 months and those first few weeks seem so far away! It is so so worth it - it will get better! :hugs:

And I almost forgot - congrats!! :flower:

Edit: I was also late to discover lansinoh! I had some organic creams, but nothing worked like the lansinoh - if I had it from the beginning things wouldn't have gotten as bad! xx

Yeah it used to hurt me at first. did it not hurt when you were bf'ing Leyla hun? x

My son is 5 weeks old, and the intial latch still hurts. I was checked by lactation consultants, and my latch was 'perfect.' I have had a tough time, though. I got mastitis when he was 2 weeks old, followed immediately by thrush which started during the mastitis. I just finished my 2 week treatment for thrush, so I'm hoping it gets better.

If you get fever, chills, red streaks on the breast, or if your breasts feel hot to the touch, go to the doctor because you likely have mastitis. It was miserable for me.

Also, if you notice white spots if you baby's mouth, then he likely has thrush and it will transfer to your nipples. If you notice 'burning' throughout the feeding, and your nipples look 'shiny' then it may be thrush. I also got tiny red bumps.

Try taking ibuprofen. It does help. Also, lanolin will help with the cracking. If you pump, make sure to use a good one (I use my Medela.) I used a cheaper pump initially, as I wasn't going to use it often, and it bruised, chapped, and cracked my nipples. The Medela was worth it's weight in gold.

If you have a good puimp, you could always pump to supplement one or two feedings a day. Sometimes giving my nipples a break saved my sanity.

Keep at it! Just think of how much good you're doing your baby. :) But, I definitely feel your pain.

I posted the same thing when I started out. Daisy's latch has always been perfect but my nipples were so sore and cracked I had to bite down on my jumper everytime she latched on to stop myself screaming. I also got mastitis after a week of breastfeeding. I found lansinoh really helped the sore nipples and the pain had totally gone by 3 weeks and never came back.

mine just started to feel better and ive been bfing for 8 days

For me it settled at 6 weeks and have had no problems since. Hope it gets better for you hun :hugs:
