when would you make them

for my grandad and DHs nans all of whom buy everything they want so are such a pain to buy for, i have bought a pack of mugs and a pack of special paint pens. thought the boys could decorate them, then you have t bake them in the oven.
just wondering when everyone would do them. i am worried about them getting ruined if they are done too early. i will be giving presents to my grandad and my family on the 15th, and dhs nans on the 22nd.
