When you don't want to know the sex of the baby..

So we had our 20 weeks scan and we don't want to know the sex of the baby. The whole time we were able to look at the screen and the baby, DH was recording as well..anyway my question is, when you don't want to know the gender how do they just hide or skip "the parts" so we don't see? The doctor was measuring the tie bones and you could see between the legs kinda.. is that how they see the "bits" or have to zoom in more? I want to be a surprise but do ultrasound technitians just think you don't know what you're seeing/understanding and just show it all? I think I saw something but not sure.. :baby:

It depends on the sonographer because some turn the screen away so they can complete the measurements and such, others just assume you don't know what you are looking for so they do it with you right there. But to see the bits, they do a toilet shot and get a shot from under the baby. Almost like they are sitting right on top of the ultrasound thingy lol.

Hmm i think I saw the toilet shot lol because she was measuring the tie bones and even showed me and I was asuming in between are the "bits" and the but on the back.. why would she say oh here's the tie bone and you can see the in between :dohh:

Bless her heart lol They could show me the bits all they wanted and I'd still be there like  I'm not good at seeing things in those ultrasounds lol

hey hun wt do you think you seen xxxxxx

Oh yeah the whole thing was confusing to me too but I've been looking at ultrasound photos and videos and felt like I kinda had an idea lol so I was a little worry not to recognize something.. :p

Well..I had to pause the video..i think I saw something like OO.. looked like OO but in the middle I don't think I saw | lol. Then I paused again and there was OO again with tiny tinee thing in the middle..not sure how big it should be for a boy:shrug::haha:

well she asked us before she started scanning, so i think thats why she didnt turn the screen away from me - there was no point!

i saw boys bits before she showed them to me when she was still measuring his femur bone & checking his spine & ribs! i saw a little "bulge" then when she said "are you sure you want to know" it was only Liam who hadnt already seen bless him.

i think they wouldnt focus on it, as that area doesnt need to be checked or measured, it just so happens boys tend to be more obvious(!) when they are checking the areas nearby.

its a shame if you did see though & you didnt want to find out - even if your not 100% sure it must have ruined your surprise a little :( xx

She asked us and we said we don't want to know but she had the screen facing us the whole time.. and I couldnt help but look lol.. but yeah I think i saw two oo and something very small in the middle (I) then it was just oo soo not really sure but I didn't wanted to see the bottom at all! :(

Honestly, your better off not thinking about it at all - especially as you didnt want to know! You may have just seen the cord, because i was confused at first, thinking she was showing me a (large) willy LOL when it was the cord through his legs!!!!! its only when he moved and his little bulge appeared!!!!!!

Dont focus on it too much, dont spoil your surprise...whats left of it! Keep the mystery there :) did your OH see anything? xx

Lol u made me laugh! Yeah I'm not looking at it anymore I was just surprised we were able to watch the whole time. Bless the baby, the whole scan went well and that's the mosy important thing!

I wasn't allowed to see the screen until after all of the measurements were taken. My dh wasn't even invited into the room until that point. We wanted to know if we were having a boy or girl and when she did the toilet shot she let me guess what I thought it was before she told me and it was very obviously a girl (3 lines, looked kinda like a hamburger lol). I thought they didn't let people see the measurements part in case there was something wrong there and it's not the tech's job to tell us there's a problem, that's up to the radiologist who looks at all the pics afterwards and notifies our doctor or midwife. Maybe it's different here in Canada than other countries though.

Im going to be surprised too. Not by choice though. When I went for my 2nd trimester ultrasound the baby's legs were crossed so we couldn't see any little parts. I wanted to find out, but I am happy either outcome.

hamburger:haha: well to me didn't look like lines more like oo :haha: I cant wait till labor it'll actually make me push harder so i can find out faster lol

I think as you wanted a surprise its good that you are still not sure (Not sure enough to go out and buy a whole lot of one colour!!) Our sonographer was a little bit surly and she barely spoke to us, she did a scan of the whole baby and at that point I knew I had seen little boy bits, I am a vet nurse and do a lot of sonography so pretty much know what I am looking at even if it is a human and not an animal!! But my DH didnt have a clue, when the sonographer had finished doing all of her measurements she asked us if we wanted to know and when we said yes she went back and concentrated on the toilet parts for us to see all. Our little boy was not shy!!
xxx

when i had mine sonographer told me if people don't want to know they have to literally scoot past the bits and it can be really awkward. tbh, i knew my baby was a boy because you could so easily see his schlong just dangling there! although with fin i saw nothing. i wanted to know with both of mine. x
