My son Jayden is 4 months and will not use a pacifier he sucks on his pointer finger and thumb. The Doc says its good he wont take to the pacifier ........but isnt his thumb just as bad? :help:

i wouldn't worry. i think a thumb is better than a dummy.

Well I'd say the paci is better as you can take it away at some stage but that's my opinion. The longer that they use either is really bad for the teeth long term. My friends step son has got real buck teeth as he still sucks his thumb at 6.

My LO hated his at first but I bought a few different teats and found one he liked. It's alot easier to settle him now although I have to put it back in if he wakes in the night whereas if he sucked his thumb he could settle himself.

paci, better for their teeth. you can take away a paci but you cant take away a thumb

ill use my two cousins as examples :haha:

my one cousin is 8, always sucked her thumb, her teeth are perfect.
my other cousin who is nearly 5, still has a dummy (eek) his teeth are awful! i know 4 is quite extreme to have dummy though!

chloe wont take a dummy she sucks her thumb when shes tired, my brother sucked his thumb for years and even now at 38 he still does when hes sleeping, one of his thumbs is shorter than the other....i have no prob with chloe doing it just now but it is something i will try to discourage her from when shes a bit older and understands a bit more x

i'd say a dummy is definatly better. you can regulate a dummy like for sleep time etc and take it away when your ready but once a child is a thumb sucker you've got no hope of stopping that till they want to if at all.

My mum used to suck her thumb all the time and when she met my dad at 18 she was conviced she'd stopped sucking her thumb years ago....turns out not! Once she was practically asleep her thumb went straight in. Dad said she continued to do this until she had me at 23.

I'd personally rather my child have a dummy than risk being a older staying over a friends house and in goes the thumb. Its not going to be a plesent experience if that happens.

Also from sucking her thumb mum has got one thumb shorter than the other. Yes it sound bull but its true :)

I plan on doing a dummy for sleep time and soothing when ill or upset only. No offence to anyone but i can't stand it when a child's got a dummy permenantly attached to them throughout the day x

hmm well thanks. im not too worried about it now but im going to try different pacifiers i hope he finds ones he likes.
