Which method should we try first???? PLEASE ANSWER. NEW TO FORUMS

Hi all, we have been TTC for just over a year now with only a chemical pregnancy thus far. Just got husbands semen analysis results back and it says "Low Morphology, may need IVF with ICSI if consistently below 4%". His results were

267 million sperm
59% motile
88% vitality
but 4% morphology (5% or more=normal).

I have heard conflicting stories on morph, but am wondering what approach you would take? Is IUI even worth a shot? The latest WHO 2010 guidelines say that 5% of fertile men have 4% morphology, but that seems like a very low percentage. That is why they have 4% as the new cut-off.

Personally- I would try iui once or twice before ivf....then you'll know you tried. We tried for months after our blighted ovum last summer- and after 2 iui's we are now converting to ivf after I produced so many eggs it made sense. We do feel better knowing at least we tried iui before getting to this point. I know it's hard- hang in there!!

i agree..try iui before ivf, less invasive and definitely less expensive. good luck

His morphology isn't terrible when you consider his staggeringly great count. 267 million?!?!?!?! Really, if you do the math 267 million sperm and 59% are motile, that makes 157 million motile sperm, out of that pool 6.3 million have a good morphology. Make sure he is taking a great multi or antioxidant supplement and I bet that would improve in 2 months. My clinic says that a semen analysis should have at least 5 million motile sperm to have a fair shot at IUI. So I would totally try a medicated IUI first. Also keep in mind that if he didn't abstain from ejaculation 2-5 days before his semen analysis, his % normal morphology will appear low.

If it were me I would try IUI first. My DH has 0-1% morph and we are doing IUI. We have done 1 so far and waiting to do the second. If that does not work we will be doing IVF. I just felt like I needed to try IUI first, but everybody is different. Best of luck!

I would do IUI first too. Make him wait about 1 week before IUI (no ejaculation) and he may want to take some robatusin (sp?) for two days before IUI (my donor had too and it helped). Have him eat healthy, reduce alcohol consumption and no saunas, over heating etc. My donor's last sample was alright, but this time we followed those guidelines and his sample was awesome! Good Luck! I agree with the girls above. I am trying IUI first as my DH has low sperm count due to undescended testes when he was born and was not corrected until he was 9 yrs old. Our last SA in February 2011 was: 7 Million .. But no problem with motility and morphology.

February 2012 is our first IUI .. in 2 weeks.
