So I went in today just for a normal check up and my doctor went over the results of my 20 week ultrasound and my blood screening with me. Everything from the quad screen and the other blood work came back negative so that was great news. He then informed me that there was a slight problem with the ultrasound and that they had found a white or bright spot on the heart and he is referring me off base to go to see a specialist to have another scan done. He told me that he isn't all that concerned and that more than likely its just a ligament that is causing the spot but I cant help but be worried even though he told me that truthfully he doesn't see a need to be concerned. Has anyone had a scare like this and everything turn out ok?

Hi Hun, didn't want to read and run, I have no expierenced that but I have read on these boards that same thing where it turned out to be nothing... Hoping those mom see your post :hugs:

Not me personally, but my godparents have. They were due a daughter around Christmas and were told she had a hole in her heart and need emergency surgery as soon as she was born. Well once she went into labour, she had a lot of medical staff storming in the room on Boxing day and whisked the baby off as soon as she was born and it turns out nothing was wrong with her, so no surgery, easy recovery and home by new years.

Thanks for your replies last night.

I was told almost the exact same thing at my 20 week ultrasound! Originally, I got a call the same day being told they found a white spot on the baby's heart and I was, like you, being referred off-post to have a more advanced ultrasound done. I was told not to worry because this happens a lot.
I looked it up and it is very common. I had my quad screening done after they found this because I'd originally turned that down. They told me it was occasionally a marker for down's syndrome. The more research I did, the more I found that one spot on the heart with no other markers and also for women under 35, there were 0 cases of down's syndrome found in those pregnancies once the babies were born.
Then I went in for my appointment afterward. I actually asked about it because it confused me. During the ultrasound, we looked at the heart for a long time and I did not see even a hint of a spot. While looking at my chart, the midwife then said that it was more of a darker shadow that might not even be anything. I was still referred off post. My QUAD results came back completely negative on all aspects.
I have my level II ultrasound coming up next Thursday. I was referred to genetic counseling as well as a transvaginal and additional abdominal ultrasound to check it. They were still treating it as a possible soft marker for down's syndrome. I turned down the genetic counseling. Personally, I feel they were going WAY overboard. These spots seem to be extremely common. I know they have to examine them further, but I have personally stopped worrying about it completely.

Thanks RebeccaR19. That made me feel a lot better. I know the doctor said not to worry but as a mom-to-be I just cant help it. We waited 6 years for our little miracle and for the doctor to tell me this was just... well I really have no words.

My son had a white spot and dilation of the kidneys. Both are soft markers for Down's syndrome. If he only had the calcium spot on his heart they wouldn't have mentioned it to us. But they had to because it was both (the kidneys he had to have treatment for so they would have said that regardless).

What I'm trying to say is - don't worry!!! X

I'm glad I could help you feel better. I know exactly how you feel. I worried too. It made it worse when I called the specialty center to schedule my follow-up ultrasound and they basically were treating me as someone whose baby had a problem. And I just kept thinking it was so ridiculous because there was nothing proven yet! I do think it's extra reassuring to have normal quad screening results especially when they are looking into something else.
Good luck with your follow-up ultrasound! I hope it all goes well. I'm anxious to get mine out of the way because I'm starting to think this is a normal thing in many babies' hearts. Perhaps more advanced technology is just picking them up more now.

I honestly think the fact that the quad screening was negative is the only reason I have not completely flipped out and lost my mind at this point. Poor DH though, he said we have nothing to worry about and I bit his head off. Then he said ok so we have to worry and again I bit his head off. I told him that I was beyond stressed out and didn't want to hear that everything was ok when it might not be.

Ive heard that a lot of times it was just nothing. Try not to worry, i know we worry so much with out little bubs inside :)

I actually JUST went through this. Yesterday was my appointment with a high risk specialist after my 24 week ultrasound showed a "soft marker" or spot on LO heart. I just had the ultrasound done yesterday by the specialist and he said it was a calcium spot on ultrasound or heart, sorry I don't remember exactly because after he told me "baby is perfectly healthy," I stopped listening and was celebrating in my head while nodding and smiling at the doctor. Lol. Basically, my Ob told me the same as yours, to not worry and that it's probably nothing, but they still had to refer me to an outside specialist.

I think you have nothing to worry about. I'm wishing you the best of luck!!

calm81 I am so glad that you got such good news! I find out on the 17th, I hope, what the spot is. I'm hoping that the news will be just as good as yours.

Same here with my daughter. She had afew though. I was referred and turned out to be nothing :D xx

Ugh. I'm in the same boat! I posted about this two weeks ago after my anatomy scan but no one had any replies :(. I was really upset. AND my doctor didn't even refer me for further scanning, she just kind of brushed it off. So I have no more ultra sounds. I feel awful.

Kitti I am so sorry. That is just awful. I would talk to the doctor and ask for another scan for peace of mind.

Just got back from my scan and everything went great! Doctor said that the spot was just a calcium deposit and that everything was normal. I wont have to go back to him and will continue with my regular OBGYN. So glad for the good news! Also as a bonus I got to see my son in 3D!
