And can keep it clean?

Circumcision or not....

Not. It is completely medically unnecessary. Not even recommended by the AMA. It's a surgical procedure on your baby's penis that is purely for aesthetic reasons. It causes nerve damage and can have serious complications. Definitely skip it.

Hmm, I guess I'm on the fence with this one. I work as a nurse on a urology ward, so I see a lot of men with foreskin problems (eg: phimosis) who have to come in to have circumcisions from the age of 19, which is understandably debilitating and embarrassing for them! I guess to skip foreskin-associated problems, it's best to get rid of it at an early age. However, I don't know if I would go for it for my child, unless it was absolutely necessary.

While I totally see what you are saying with foreskin related issues down the line, but IMO thats like saying "Well I could get breast cancer down the road so lets just chop these suckers off just in case" I dunno... Im strange like that

Haha! True, but drastic..! Breasts have a more meaningful purpose, whereas having a foreskin and not having a foreskin doesn't necessarily make much difference. ;)

I've been going back and forth on this and haven't made a solid decision yet, but according to my research, I feel that the benefits of circumcision performed by a qualified physician do outweigh the risks (of the procedure itself and future complications). Definitely a personal decision for everyone and one that I won't make until we're 100% confident and comfortable with our choice.

Hopefully I'll only have girls and won't have to make the decision :)

My OH and I will not circumcise any of our sons.

For the simple reason it is not medically necessary at all.

Never really entered my mind- so on that note no I wouldn't. It's there for a reason I guess. X

I can see both sides, but I agree with no. If I had a boy, he won't be circumsised. :)

No, I wouldn't, I don't have any religious reasons for doing so, and if it's not medically necessary I wouldn't do it. As long as his parents teach him how to keep himself clean as he grows up, there should be no problem with hygiene either. Of course if I had a little boy who needed it doing because he was having problems, that's a different matter, but as a routine thing? No, it's got to be his choice when he's old enough. (On a different note, but for the same reasons, I'd never have my baby daughter's ears pierced either, I'd wait til she started asking me, then have a discussion with her about it.)

I think this is very uncommon in the UK (non-religious circumcision anyway) so I'm not sure it really arises as a routine question in baby boys over here. Please correct me if I'm wrong, but I've certainly never heard anything about it from my friends who have sons.

there is a cultural issue here too, Americans tend to have a higher circumcision rate whereas in the UK we tend not to do it unless it is to do with an individual culture, eg Jews, Muslims or a medical reason.

I think its cruel. I wouldn't want my lady bits hacked to pieces so don't think its fair that defenceless newborns are subject to it. The poor bairns don't get a choice.

i defo wouldnt do it, but thats just my opinion lol, i think its just like any medical condition if it arises then deal with it then, i wouldnt put my baby through surgery to prevent something pretty minor which may not even effect him, if i knew that 100% he would have problems with it as an adult then id reconsider it for sure

As much as I agree that it's not 'medically neccessary' and I'm sure we'll all teach our LOs proper boy-hygiene :)haha:) but regardless, I intend on circumsition.

It's not religious, just a preventative thing. My OH's brother had Paraphimosis (tight foreskin) which caused him untold problems as a baby boy. Since that, they had all their boys circumsised. I appreciate that it is big thing to do, and I also know that once I have a little baby boy I might not be comfortable letting him out of my sight long enough to be hurt by a Dr! However, I just feel it is the right thing to do. Maybe I'm biased :haha: and I'm prepared to rethink the decision as and when I'm pregnant and officially team blue!

We didn't get it done for our boy. I don't really see the point. We're not religious, OH isn't circumcised etc.

You may rethink it completely (not being sarcastic or anything ). My LO was in hospital at 2 weeks old with a blood infection and had to have a lumbar puncture. I didn't stay with him as a) the room was tiny and there was lots of doctors, b) I couldn't have held him as they had to hold him tightly in the fetal position and c) I'd already been with him when he had a cannula inserted into his hand (was alone as OH had gone home to get our things) and I couldn't bear to see him in such pain again. We left the ward to get a drink then came back and waited in the private room they put us in... when they brought him back to us he was still screaming  I've never heard him cry like that since and I never hope to again.

So based on that, you may rethink it because even though my LO won't remember the pain (and he forgot it quickly too at the hospital) I will remember it and it's awful.

American girl here and would not circumcise our boy (if we have one).
