When I set up my appointment the woman on the phone was so heavy about being careful to look for eptopic signs that I feel like I might be being paranoid. However, I definitely have sharp and frequent pains (5 times a day, more sharp if I'm doing something strenuous) in my left ovary area. I am sure it is either eptopic or a cyst because I don't have any other general cramping, it's specific to this area.

I know the doctor doesn't usually scan before 8 weeks. I'm going in tomorrow at 7 weeks 2 days with this one symptom coupled with as one lady put it "bone deep night of the living dead exhaustion) which manifests with faintness and dizzyness sometimes.

think i can convince them to do an early scan?

For your sake I hope they do. Put a real emphasis on the pain. I'm all for exagerating things when it comes to worries of ectopic, considering it certainly won't hurt. With mine, I was repeatedly told that I need to calm down and relax and because of that attitude I lost a tube. I have to get early scans everytime I get pregnant now, but my doctor moved mine up and I won't get it til 6 weeks, and now I'm freaking out.

I get those charlie horse type of pains (and have with my other pregnancies too) where if I get up too fast it will happen. That is normal, I was told. Is it worse than that?

Kimini,
wow! thanks for telling me. I was thinking I should exaggerate too. I know they think we're all just paranoid but the pain is not my exaggeration. did you have bleeding with yours? i read that it is more likely a cyst if i'm not bleeding and i'm not.
i'm very sorry about your complications. this site reminds me how blessed we are to have a successful pregnancy. I'll say a little prayer for you now. Glad to see you're pregnant again :)

mscorribaby,
the intensity of the pain seems normal for sure... but the location is so very specific to my left ovary area... very specific. when i get the sharp pains they are tolerable yes, but always right there in the exact same spot. I find it hurts more when i bend over and hurts for a longer period of time. i'm praying just a cyst, but I know it's something... i have no cramping elsewhere. beautiful picture by the way :)

also kimin, i'm not the suing type but seriously it seems like you should be able to sue or something. so unfair!

I see...well I had a friend who had a cyst on her ovary when she was preggo and it went away in like 6-8 weeks so I hope that is all you have :) I know those charlie horse pains, which I get on my side too, really hurt lol like make me bend over from pain. I had them worst my last pregnancy though.
Oh and thanks for the pic comment :)..I thought yours was really artistic when I first seen it:)

If I had to guess I'd say its a cyst. As for suing, I thought about it, but in the end I was too drugged up and later seriously depressed to care. Who new you could have postpartum depression from such an early stage?
I had bleeding that started at 4w6d with my ectopic and it carried on until I had surgery at 6w6d. But at about 6w3d I was in hell with the pain and called into work and everything. Odd thing is, they did a vag. ultrasound at 4w6d, and saw nothing, hcg was 1300 something, didn't do anymore u/s but did more blood work, hcg stayed at about 1400 for another week, and they still weren't worried. Did another scan at 6w4d and still saw nothing. Blood work at 6w6d showed hcg at 3000 and emergency scan (they literally called and told me to come in immediately) showed internal bleeding and still no baby. So about 2 hours after that ultrasound I was being looked after by some very sympathetic females (not a single man in the room) being given large doses of everything to calm me down and they took my angel from me. I don't remember much about that day, but the first thing I asked was "did they have to take the tube?" They said yes and I told them I was going to throw up.

So I really think you're probly ok, but I still wouldn't risk it. Some people say ectopics don't hurt until they rupture, but mine hadn't ruptured and it hurt very very bad. It was probably the busted blood vessels leaking into my diaphragm causing the pain, but again, I didn't have the classic shoulder pain. So when in doubt: lie, exaggerate, sneak around and get second opinions, but don't let anyone tell you you are just a paranoid preggy woman. My doctor's office actually tried to refuse letting me get bloodwork done at the hospital where it was quicker. I yelled at the nurse who told me no, and probly cussed at her too, lol.

yea, the more i read the more i find that they are usually hellish feeling and though i have strange pains and incredible light headedness from time to time, i'm not suffering as you were... i'm so sorry again and again for your loss and i'm looking forward to learning more as you go. i was reading on another forum that so many women carried h&h even after many problems with ectopic pregnancies. i hope yours is the same.

I just realized you are in florida. My sister-in-law and I were just moaning about being pregnant through summer, but now I feel silly considering I won't have to deal with that heat all the time. Good luck with everything!

Definitely get it checked out, but I just wanted to mention that I had pain on my right side between 5 and 7 weeks that turned out to be nothing. Baby is in the right place, and I still have no idea what those pains were. Take your pain seriously, but I just wanted to reassure you that it can happen even when everything is fine. Let us know how everything goes

deifinately go for it, really pile on the amount of stress it's putting you under, i asked for early scan because of previous mmc but was refused, then had cramps and just made them sound worse than they were-really naughty i know but i was so anxious to check all was ok that needs must! was thrilled to get ealry scan and see strong heartbeat. hope all goes well will be thinking of you x

I think you should demand one.

I also have sharp pain - in my right side, have had it since dec tho. I had an early scan but due to bleeding not the pain. I mentioned the pain though as also hurt when they did transvag scan when looking towards right side. Turns out i have a 'bulky ovary.' This is what causes me so much bloody pain! I hope your pain is caused by similar thing though and not an ectopic. fingers crossed for you x

I have had an ectopic and they may scan but bear in mind it is not unusual to see nothing if its ectopic. Its normally diagnosed by 48 hr hcg tests.

If you have any feeling that it may be ectopic you must be see immediately. At 7plus weeks you could rupture at any moment. I dont want to scare you but this is a life or death situation.

Please get to a&e right away. Good luck. X

i am in the same situation at the min, i think i might be paranoid after doing research as i had an sti and know this can cause damage in the tubes. but iv got a dull achey belly with the occasional shrap twinge and had it the last few days, and now i have a really bad back. im thinking of ringing up the early pregnancy unit tomorrow and seeinng what they say. if something is wrong id rather get it sorted earlier rather than later. i hope its all well for you though xx

I am worried too. I have been having crampy pains and mostly in my right side. I don't know if it is normal or not :(

If anyone suspects, no matter small a suspicion it is, please get seen. The reality of this condition is that you can die. Take it from me. I nearly died in a lift, because I was misdiagnosed. Its easily diagnosed over 48 hrs via hcg and the sooner the get it treated the less chance you will have of loosing a tube, which I did.

Thinking of you all ladies. XX

wow! thank you for all of the great advice. I'm glad to see others taking it so seriously too. I think on one hand I'm learning that all symptoms are a little normal so not to stress about anything too much. That is, get it checked out and be safe, but guess first and foremost (unless you are in severe pain) that your baby is going to be okay. There's a lot of need for caution, but I worry we all worry too much!!! Having said that, I went for my first dr. appointment today and was very upset when they would not scan me. However, I couldn't complain too much because they said the doctor who was certified to do it was not in. I was with nurses and midwives and they did schedule me for an early scan but I have to wait a few days.... so they did meet me half way.

as far as what did happen...the regular.... urine test, pap, the scheduled a blood test. how do i learn about the hcg levels everyone is talking about? i think i should have gotten that info today. a pretty uneventful visit.

she said my uterus felt like it was as big as it should be (leading me to believe the baby is in the right place ) :) but that my ovary was swollen (leading me to worry again) so i'll know in a few days but i'm feeling better because of the uterus comment.

much love and support.
for all of you feeling twinges...cysts are so so normal and hurt a lot sometimes. likely it's normal, but yes if you have very specific cramps in one side...take a peek to make sure baby is not somewhere he/she is not supposed to be!

Beta hcg is just the blood pregnancy test. In diagnosing ectopic they take two samples over 48 hours. In ectopic you dont seen the usual doubling of numbers.

Best of luck. XX

Here is a little info on hcg and ectopics:

Peak HCG level % of ectopics
<1000 45%
1000-3000 21%
3000-5000 15%
5000-10,000 10%
> 10,000 9%

Trend of hCG titers with ectopic pregnancies
Trend of HCG levels % of cases
Falling 57%
Abnormally rising 36%
Normally rising 7%

With mine I was in the 21-36% chance of ectopic and they still ignored it until it was too late to save the tube. I'm feeling better because I'm only in the 7-21% range this time. I'd feel even better if they'd do one more hcg test.
