Hi Girls,
I'm not well at the Mo and have an infection ( shivering, headaches & swollen glands) I went to the Dr on Friday and he was going to give me antibiotics that are safe in pregnancy ( I'm 29 weeks) but I refused to take them as I don;t like to take anyhting when pregnant. He was ok with it and just said to rest and drink load of fluids and to go back if i get worse.
I'm no better and thinking of going back tomorrow to get the tablets. I know I'm probably being daft because he wouldn't prescribe them if they weren't safe, But I really don;t want to take them in case they harm the baby.
Have any of you taken antibiotics when pregnant???, Thanks.

i had a bad chest infection the doc refused to give me anything well a week later i had to go hospital it got so bad they were shocked the doc had not given me anything and gave me antibiotics straight away and told me they were totally safe x

When i was about 5 weeks pregnant i got an abscess (sp?) on my face under my top lip and the doctor prescribed antibiotics i said if it was ok to take them while pregnant and she said it was fine! At my scans baby has been fine.

I'm on my 3rd lot of amoxycillian (sp?) since being pregnant, twice in first trimester for recurrent UTI and this week for chest infection. I was in agony and pulled all the muscles at bottom of my bump with constant coughing, I went to Drs knowing i'd be given them and didnt think twice about not taking them. The drs dont like handing out anti biotics if not needed as you'll then struggle to fight off future infections by yourself and theres no way they would give you something that may harm your baby.

I'd definatley be going back for them, theres no need to suffer baby will be fine.

I have taken them twice while being pregnant, doesn't harm the baby. Worse if your feeling crap, the nutrience that baby needs your using it to fight off the infection. I would definatly take them.

I was given amoxycillian at around 28 weeks pregnant for a UTI, i didn't think twice about taking them as i guess if they we're not safe the doc wouldn't of prescribed them? x

I've taken amoxycillon (sp?) for a UTI and it helped, baby seems fine since too. So I'd go for it, they wouldn't give it you unless you needed it :)

It's a bit different for UTIs, there is clear evidence that untreated UTIs can lead to preterm labour and these should be treated and all geographical areas have a policy for a pregnancy safe antibiotic that treats their known bacteria profile. It's a bit harder giving Antibiotics for upper respiratory symptoms in pregnancy, as there are plenty of safe antibiotics it's just a bit less clear if the illness is viral or bacterial, so is the drug indicated? Clearly if people are coughing up green phlegm, or not getting better they might benefit from antibiotics. It would depend how sick I felt and how close I was to term, I really don't want to go into labour feeling less than 100%

I am on my second lot of amox this pregnancy. First lot around 28 weeks for a chest infection that wouldn't clear for over 3 weeks, green phlegm and coughing so hard I was having contractions!
This time I'm taking them for a UTI and yeast infection.

I would only have them if really needed but think they are safe.

Im currently taking anti bs now for an infected spider bite on my finger ewwww! Tried to deal with it myself 1st but ended up with infection track marks right up to my armpit :( so had no choice really. Im taking co-amoxiclav and have been assured they are totally safe x Im currently 33+2

I had amoxycillin both during this pregnancy and my last and have not had any nasty side effects.

If you need them hun take them x

I have had amoxicillin for a recurrent tooth infection this pregnancy and for a uti with dd. If you are unwell it is not good for your baby, and any antibiotics they prescribe will be safe in pregnancy! However it is your choice, if you don't feel comfortable taking them talk to your Dr about it! I hope you feel better soon xx

I've had two lots of amoxicillin and one lot of another antibiotic before 29 weeks for sinus infection and chest infection. When doc prescribes them, it pings up on comp that I'm pregnant and whether suitable or not and as I'm not allergic to anything I don't read the leaflet in she packet or I'd prob not take them!!
With my sinus infection I had to take codeine and ibuprofen too as paracetamol wouldn't even dent the pain, had scan on Thurs and baby is perfect xx

Sounds more like a virus than an infection so antib's prob won't help. Ask your doc if he does think its a bacterial infection?

Have you tried taking/having natural antivirals/bacterials? Like garlic, honey, lots if Vit C. Hot water with lemon etc?

IMO it is way less safe to let an infection go while pregnant than it is to take a well documented antibiotic like, say, penicillin. I got a skin abscess, and, like you, I was scared to take something, but I did because had it progressed to a dangerous point it would have required them moving to more heavy hitting antibiotics that are less well-documented than the penicillin that cleared it up. Infections while pregnant can be a very significant risk factor and your immune system is also not what it normally is. Take care.

I had a UTI and had to take amoxicillin. Trust me, I didn't like the idea AT ALL, but I knew getting rid of the infection was the most important. The doc reassured me it would be ok and said it's especially safe in the third trimester (which you are) because most your baby's main development has already taken place and it's in there just growing away! They definitely know which antibiotics are ok to get us preggos.

Personal opinion--but I think taking the antibiotic and getting the infection OUT is much better than allowing infection to consume your body, especially if you have a fever. Fever during pregnancy=no good!

Agreed, from your description it sounds like a virus. I'm not against antibiotics in pregnancy or anything (I think they're totally safe) but I generally don't take antibiotics unless it's a very clear cut bacterial infection (UTI for example, abcess, other things people mentioned) just because of the personal and societal risk of breeding antibiotic-resistant bacteria :) Doctors tend to overprescribe antibiotics for viruses... anyway, Bean66's suggestions are awesome :)

I had a terrible staph infection when I was around 11 weeks- required 3 days of IV antibiotics and then 6 days of oral antibiotics. I took them, feeling that letting a staph infection run rampant in my body could cause a whole host of problems for me and the babe. All is well.

Just a note- talk to your doctor or pharmacist about taking a probiotic alongside your antibiotic. No, they won't cancel each other out, but antibiotics can cause problems with excess yeast.

I had to take a few courses of nasty antibiotics for a really vile kidney infection which needed to go as it was very bad for me and the baby. The meds made her quite sluggish as well as making me overly tired but I feel so mych better for having taken them as the pain was unbearable!!

Leaving an infection untreated is worse for baby then antibiotics are and there are heaps of antibiotics out there which are Category A in pregnancy which means they are completely safe to take. I spent almost 2 weeks in hospital being pumped full of antibiotics and my little man is very healthy x
