I'm waiting to find out baby's sex this time, and I'm wondering what it's really like as far as clothing goes. Regardless of boy or girl, baby will likely need new clothes as it'll be cold and wet as opposed to outrageously hot like it was for my son's arrival. I'm not too worried about a girl wearing her brother's clothes, but sizing/season will be an issue. So, how did you go about getting clothes? Just take baby out shopping in the early days? Buy unisex small sizes before? Send grandma out to do some shopping?

I have picked up a few warm 3 month size unisex outfits at a recent rummage sale. (Chance of kid fitting in newborn size is unlikely, and big is fine by me).

Anyway, just wondering how folks have dealt with it. Thanks!

Yay for team yellow!

We didn't find out, but because this was our first we had a baby shower and people bought us some unisex clothes. We didn't have too much to be honest (I found that because we didn't know the gender, people tended to buy us practical gifts rather than just lots of clothes, which was awesome!) but they only need about 8 onesies when they are newborn so that worked out fine. I remember being a little bummed out buying a couple of onesies while pregnant, just because there was hardly any unisex clothes around here. I only managed to buy a few grey onesies. Albie lived in grey when he was born haha.

Luckily after he was born a friend gave us HEAPS of her old sons 3-6 month clothes, so we haven't had to do much shopping. But now that Ds is 3 months, I will start shopping for his next sizes. I am excited to finally realllly shop!!!

Anyway, so long as you have about 8 newborn onesies, some beanies and lots of blankets, then that will do you fine for a while. No rushing after the birth is necessary. Plus, if you do have a girl I'm sure that you will definitely have people buying you clothing gifts!

Good luck with your pregnancy. Waiting until the birth to find out the gender was such a great experience I hope you love the moment x

Thanks for replying! We got really lucky with hand me downs with my son, but we literally have no close friends with girls... only boys! (Which has me convinced I'm having a girl, just to even out the universe.) I'm sure we will be gifted many adorable outfits if it's a girl, but I was mostly thinking about those really early days. I'm thinking maybe I should find a few more warm unisex pieces... we nicknamed my son "poopstain" within days of his arrival for a reason ;-)

By the way, your little guy has my birthday! It's a good one :-D

Haha yay for good birthdays.

Poopstain :haha: we didn't have that problem, just SO. MUCH. VOMIT.

I found it was really easy to get everything we needed in advance. There are loads of unisex baby clothes which are all really cute. Most of our smallest sizes were just plain white (white vests and sleepsuits) and actually our daughter was small (6lbs 9 oz), so those new baby sizes lasted her until she was 3 months! But we also got a bunch of 0-3 month sizes in prints that would have been perfectly appropriate for a boy or a girl (and those lasted us til 6 months). We honestly didn't dress her in anything other than vests and sleepsuits for the first few months anyway, so those lasted us a long time. We had a few friends and family members send a few outfits after she was born that were more 'girly', which was nice, so we also had those if we did want to dress her in anything else. But really it was fine. We will find out next time (just because I want to know what it's like to know and do something different since our next will be our last) and I don't plan to go out and buy anything new just because the unisex stuff worked so well last time. We just don't need anything. I'm sure you'll be fine in whatever you already have plus getting some new things in unisex and certainly people will buy things and you can order a few special things if you see something cute, but really they don't need much in the first few months anyway.

I bought white, then once she was born owls gave us gifts and I did shopping (online and in the shops)

I am team yellow and due in about 3 weeks. I have loads of baby clothes all colours of the rainbow (except pink, but even if I knew for sure it was a girl I wouldn't buy much pink). No need to stick to white/cream clothes, there's no reason why both boys and girls can't wear red, yellow, green, purple, orange, etc. I also don't see a problem with a little girl wearing a blue onesie with cars or dinosaurs on it, or a little boy wearing something with flowers on it. So I don't really see any reason to wait until the baby is born to buy clothes. Unless you want clothes that say things like "Mommy's Little Princess" or things like that, not my taste so it wasn't an issue for me.

I was team yellow with both of mine and just made sure I and plenty of White babygrows and vests to begin with. I was never really one for outfits in the beginning anyway so that suited us just fine. You can get some lovely little white furry pram suits etc. I got a lot of clothes from friends but also used staying up bf to my advantage and bought loads of stuff from eBay when the babies came along 😂

I'm not going to find out this babies gender, and will get gender neutral things beforehand. My babies fit newborn fine though. I quite like blacks, oranges and greens so will get stuff like this:

Sophie did wear a lot of her brothers clothing.

With my second kid, we did lots of hand-me-downs for the smaller sizes. They were born at opposite ends of the year, but one was fall and one was spring, so it worked out. As Leo grew, we ran into the seasonality issue. When he grew into one set of clothes, we bought new clothes in the next size up. Right now, he's actually wearing a lot of hand-me-downs again and a few new things. Given my experience with my first and with my second, I would buy gowns, long sleeve bodysuits/onsies, pants, socks, and sleepsuits in size 3 months and then as the baby starts growing into them, I'd go out again and buy clothes in the next size up.
