I was trying to work out what to do for Rivers birthday and I thought of going to a zoo but thinking about it im not sure i'd be comfortable taking River to one.

Zoos always make me feel sad and I dont really want River growing up thinking there ok but I know going to the zoo is kind of something all kids love.

We go to longleat as its more open which im more comfortable with but it still doesnt really sit well with me.

anyone else feel the same?

I refuse to go to Woburn Safari Park EVER AGAIN. The animals are quite clearly depressed it made me want to CRY.

Whipsnade Zoo is part of the ZSL and I actually really like it there. They have a lot of space and they don't seem to have gone loopy.

Colchester Zoo is great for seeing animals but they are very cramped and again don't seem very happy. The monkeys go absolutely crazy in their little cage. It's scarey. They look like they're going to kill eachother.

If you aren't comfortable to a zoo what about a farm? There's a few round here which have kids play areas/soft play/nice coffee shop & I always think they would be great for kids parties - see them there quite regulary too. There's one about 10 mins from us & I swear I must go 3 times a week with Emma, she LOVES it, I think it's because I let her run about but she always goes up to the sheep and goes 'ahhhhhh' as she strokes them, bless!!

Yeah I can't go to many zoos myself as I want to let all the animals out.
I hate it when they don't have a lot of space. I always want to rescue them!

Im torn on the whole zoo thing, I love going to them and finding out about these animals but I feel sad that they arnt in their natural inviroment.
Problem is without these zoos us and our children would never learn about or get to see these animals and without some of these breeding projects alot of these animals would become extint.
At least they arnt no where near as bad as some of the zoos in other countries.

zoos are one of those tricky things for me ... they have there obvious good points ... but at the same time bad points :(

I have found a farm near me which i think we'll go to. Ive seen the farm pictures on your FB Emma looks so sweet with the animals.

Marwell is a conservation zoo. The animals have mainly been rescues and would not have survived in the wild xx

What about monkey world in Wool, Dorset. Again, rescued monkeys clearly happy x

I hate it when they have tigers and they are just pacing back and forth it must be damaging them mentally

This is a good website for reviews:https://www.goodzoos.com/Countries/united.htm

Marwell done well x

zoos do a lot of good too with conservation and breeding of endangered species. double edged sword i spose but i still enjoy taking amelie

Whipsnade is lovely.

I went to one abroad (Barcelona) and it made me sick to see how the animals were treated, we stay literally 10 minutes as it was so distressing.

I'm super close to the san diego zoo that we go to almost weekly. They do so much with conservation efforts and breeding endangered animals to avoid extinction. They have a panda breeding program and the california condors among other things... I love learning about all the animals and I do feel sad for the big cats that pace back and forth but I truly believe zoos have animals best interests at heart. Emma really enjoys it too.
